Yeah I would start with 1000 by hand and use a DA with 1500 and then 2000 before cut and buff.
I have a Astro EVO-T with a 1.4 tip that I use on a regular basis. It's essentially an Iwata LPH400 copy. Even the tip sets are interchangable. I paid $100 bucks shipped brand new for it and its an AWESOME beginner's gun. Post pics as you go!

Little bit of an update. Got the rest of the car painted this weekend. I dont know if it was just by chance, or I just got that much better since I did the front parts, but I'm nothing short of un-******-beleiveable.
Short story is, I painted the chassis, doors and hatch and its not much short of perfect. no drips, no runs, and not even much for dust. I switched to my $35 northern tool gun (vaper) and that thing sprays awesome, better than the more expensive one I used last time. Got alot of it back together yesterday.
The parts I sprayed last weekend I decided need to be wet sanded, hence why the rear bumper is not up to par with the rest of the car. I didnt have time to buff it out today. Dont know what happened but my drivers fender is screwed. Must have been some cominants in the plastic or something but theres a big spot in it, Im just gonna throw it on for now and buy another new fender and respray it with the hood and spoiler.
Anyway, it is what it is so far, will get a little more done next weekend if I can
