Default VHT wetsanding... Tailights WERE a bit too dark.

Ok, For all those who are a little nervous about VHTing your taillights or whatever.... I did a couple coats of VHT (3) on my taillights a couple months ago. I allways thought they were a smidge too dark. I never got around to clearcoating them.

I just finished wetsanding my VHT'd tails w/ 2000 grit. It lightened them up a little. I also washed them down good and hit them w/ three coats of clear. THey look phenominal now! ... I'm just debating if I waant to wetsand the clear and hit it again! If it looks great now, I wonder if I could get it to look better.

Wetsanding DOES lighten it up a little if you think they cam out too dark. But, obviously, wait till the paint has fully cured or you could possibly make it worse. When I get my camera back I'll take some pics.

bayer-z28, you got any pics of the tailights now that you fixed em up to your liking?

Next year I plan on putting a couple coats on mine (1 or two light coats). I don't want them dark like most people have them, I just want them a little darker, and trying to find someone with pics of something similar.

no pics yet... I left my good camera in my buddys truck after I went riding last weekend, and my backup may not have a MEM stick in it. I'll check when I get home...

The key is ... a couple LIGHT COATS! Mine were a bit heavy, and three coats. I'll be able to tell more tonite when I leave work. I'll try to get some pics when I can and BUMP this back up... you'll see it. One guy has a really NOICE looking set on his red SS, or Z28. I think it's on here.. or the other board.

I think they could be a smidge lighter... but I guess I'll have to live w/ this, or WS them again.

Can you post up the URL of the post with the nice ones done to the red SS or Z28?

Also, try to get those pics up soon. I am dying of anxiety here to see how they look!!!

i would suggest taking them to a body shop to get cleared, nothing beats a professional clear coat.

ok, here we go....

First mine. I still think they are a smidge too dark. They could use another wetsanding and clearcoat. Ontop of the clear I already did. This is also NOT my good camera... BAD immage noise.

oh, Transamin00, those talks look secksee w/ the silver!!!

NEXT... The way I'd LIKE them to look. I found this on a similar thread on CZ28...

Yeah, the bottom ones look much closer to the tint I was looking to get. I may even go a hair lighter than that as well.

I already plan on having a body shop do it for me. They shouldn't charge much seeing as how I will bring them the parts and the labor will be very little, plus supplies will be negledgable.

I was looking more to make mine about the same darkness as these;

It's easy to do it yourself. If you've painted before. Just clean it good and give it a light sanding. Practice on something before hand.

two very light coats would be purfect for what you are lookiing for. Or one heave coat. That was great on mine, but I ended up doing two more... No idea why.

I used to paint houses before I came into the Air Force, so I am confident in my painting abilities. However I am more confident in my body shops, and their clear coat vs. the clear I would get at a paint store.

I would rather have them done to perfection to match the rest of my car.

fair enough..

I just realised I put this in the wrong room. I meant for it to be in the appearance section...

I re-did the clear on my tails today. Wetsanded again and did three coats fo clear. I laid it on a little thicker this time and it came out better. DOn't mind the bad immage noise, this camera SUX! Shooting at 200ISO and it's still discustingly noisy.

www.ws6store has it. I think www.afterthoughtsauto.com has it too.

It's pretty neat. It's unaffected by the light coming out from the inside of the lense. Looks dark, but the lights still work great.

I have no idea. I haven't gotten bugged............Yet.......

It's prolly no more legal/illegal than tail covers. It says on the can.."For off road use only."

I'm thinking about getting some lenses at the scrap yard, VHTing them and selling them. I can purfect the system the more I do.

If everyone with blackouts gets away with it, I don't see how spraying the VHT would be any different. Besides, with the VHT you usually go lighter than the blackouts look anyways.
