Cool Por-15

Anybody use it on their engine, rear or any part of their car? What kind of results did you get?

Was it easy to apply?
Did it flake right away?

I am about to buy some black to paint (POR-15) my moser rear that is about to go into the car.

I am also getting some chevy orange to paint (POR-15) my new iron block. The car is white but I want to paint the iron block to slow the rust process.

Any comments welcome, opinions about colors for the block or the motor. This painting will start when I get home from deployment pretty soon.

Thanks for reading, and please post pics of examples if you got 'em.
Jon

A guy I know from another site, did the whole underside of the unibody with por, I also did my floor pans with it after I put the new ones in.
Sorry I have no experience with using it on engine parts, but here are some pics:

I don't care what color you paint your engine, but for the love of God, only use black on the rear axle.

POR-15 is what is on my Strange 12-bolt, and it came out great.

por 15 is awsome! just dont put it on any bolts you might want to get off ever because when it drys its harder than steel! i used it on the frame of a 80's silverado of mine that was rotting out and it totally stoped it and looked good but if it is exposed to direct sunlight it dulls fast. but its good stuff.

I coated my entire passenger floor board to cure some rust and also used in on the rear end. I highly recommend this stuff. I haven't noticed any flaking or adhesion problems.

A friend is using it on his block and going with black. Where are you deployed? I'm heading to Afganastan after the first of the year. Would like to get some info if thats where your stationed. Stay safe.

Harder than steel? No. It really isn't. Not even close. It is paint.

It doesn't stick well to smooth surfaces, it will come off with the scrape of a fingernail on them (bare smooth steel for example). The surface needs some roughness to it for it to 'bite'. Also, don't paint over it for at least a week after application, or it will bubble up on you (happened to me).

It does smooth out nicely, even when brush applied.

I don't like that it's air activated, and if you don't use up what you have fairly quickly, the whole can goes bad. I like 2-part stuff (like epoxy primers). Of the POR-15 I've purchased, about 40% of it ($$) got thrown away. Of the epoxy primer I've purchased, virtually none of it was wasted.

I used some to seal the trunk floor of a 71 mustang that had several pin hole sized rust holes. I hadnt removed the gas tank at that point, And almost never did. i tore the tank all to pieces trying to get it loose where 4 or 5 places had glued it to the trunk floor. I believe it was originaly created to coat oil rigs where metal is constantly attacked by salt. 5 years ago i got some on a pair of pants i had, thats the only part of the pants left..... lol. TUFF STUFF!!!! wear gloves

It's good stuff. Just don't get it on anything you don't want it on. IE: your hands. I used it on my S60 before I put it in and it has held up extremely well.

I hate to say it but the stuff sucks.
It LOOKS good, but did it stop rust? Who knows it's black.
When I bought POR 15 they said clear is the same formula as black or any other color, you just can't use it in the sun.
Ok, so I took a steel framing square, prepped as the instructions say, didn't remove 100% of the rust because POR 15 claims to stop rust.
After a full cure I put the framing square out in the grass in the shade. After about 6-8 months you could see the rust spider webbing. after a year and a half the surface was no longer smooth and there was a ton of rust.

Now, get black, put it on your floor board and put carpet over it, it's going to be a long time before you realize it never stopped rust.
I've had better luck with rustoleum rusty metal primer.
