Default IAT Sensor required for Speed Density?

Getting my swap finished up and have not been able to find an answer to my question.

I am going to be running speed density, I have a custom harness made with no o2's, or MAF. However I don't know if I will need a IAT sensor. I know that it is a great tool to have when it comes to tuning(I already have EGT and Wideband o2 sensors) but will I need it? Essentially the car will be tuned 1 time, running 1 open-loop tune, so will i need it for anything other than the tuning process? This setup will be Naturally aspirated, and may see a small shot later down the road.

So do I need to buy the sensor and install it? Or can I just run the car without the IAT. If I do need to get it, I found I some information Here about putting it in the EGR provision in my intake manifold (old FAST 78mm). Anyone else feel this is a good spot to put it? I know people often do that with FI so the sensor doesn't blow out of the charge pipe.

Thank you

You will need the IAT. Knowing the temp of the incoming air is far more critical when running in OLSD.

Make sure that the ENTIRE VE Table is properly tuned with a WBO2 if it is going to stay in OLSD.

As far as the location of it, I have no experience with running the sensor in the intake manifold.

The car should be a blast to drive! Let us know how it turns out.

Yes, you need it... Anywhere that will get an accurate measure of incoming air temperature is fine.

Ahh yeah its kinda important since its one of the core aspects of;
Speed = RPM
Density = Map, TEMP, constants (VE, Capacity)

I prefer a location outside the engine compartment, so long
as your in-taken air is also ducted from outside. What you
want is a good representation of the ingested air, without
influence from the engine bay surroundings. But there are
many "cold air" schemes and not all of them are that good,
in the respect of minimum temperature change from outside.
"Free Ram Air" and SLP CAI being a couple of the worst.

i prefer to use a IAT but others have had good luck tuning without the IAT. Other engine management systems dont use a IAT. So yes it can be done but involves more work to get it ot work right.

In order for any speed density system to work properly, it needs an accurate estimate of the actual temperature of the air charge entering the cylinders. Temp plays a huge role in the calculation. (PV=nRT and n=PV/RT, remember?) Substituting outside air temp (without any other ECT biasing) will only get one particular temperature range working well, but give you fits as the real inlet temp changes in the summer versus fall/spring.

No inlet temp here. Been running the car this way for many years (2004). OLSD.

A/F swings a bit with the colder weather, but it isn't tremendous. I have an onboard WB.

It is preferrable to have it hooked up, but the car will still run fine if you don't.
