Default Anyone with a Frost tune have bucking?

My engine is new including EPS cam and ported 241's. I got a mail-order tune (not Frost) to get it fired and I've tweaked it w/ EFI Live for the last couple weeks. It idles decent and the VE tables & MAF are pretty close. But I have bucking & surging in 2nd / 3rd / 4th gear at light throttle between 1400& 2000 with the original tune and after my tweaks.

I'm just wondering if I should throw in the towel & get a Frost tune like I probably should have to begin with. But if I'll still have bucking with a Frost tune then I certainly won't spend the money. What do you guys think?

you could start by posting your tune and a scan. You might want to contact frost directly to discuss your options.

Yeah I would talk to Steve, not sure if he's perfected getting bucking to go away, I know I never did.

depending on the cam bucking and surging may be quite difficult if not impossible to get rid of...

Ya, I'll probably get in touch with Steve, I'm just curious to see what others have found. The cam is not that big - 226/230-113 - it lopes a little at idle and only has +2* overlap. Before picking the cam I read a lot of threads about cams that size and guys were saying the car drives like stock after a good tune.

If you follow both of these tutorials, you should be able to get rid of the issues. That cam is not too big.

It took me a while tweaking, but I was able to get mine pretty smooth. Follow SSpdmon's steps and you can get it.
Also use the MAF flow for desired airflow, not the raf method. It seems to help.

Good luck.

Thanks bmax. I had gone thru AutoVE, AutoMAF, RAFIG, & SSpdmon's tutorial but still had bucking. This morning I redid AutoVE & AutoMAF. They were pretty close but needed a little tweaking. Now the bucking problem is a little better but not completely gone. I've attached a tune & log if anyone would like to take a look. Thanks.

Tolerance.. I have many customers come in saying there cars drive like stock. One customer swore his car drove great/like stock but I took it for a ride and it bucked in all gears under 2k rpm. His answer was- I cruise at 3k rpm.

Wow. I may have picked a different cam if I knew that. Anyway I have made some improvements and I'll keep tweaking.

Nothing can ever replace getting a good dyno tune. You shouldn't have to live with surging or bucking with a cam that mild. Bob

Ya, that's what I thought too. I figured I'd be able to dial in the mail-order tune myself and go to the dyno for spark & WOT tuning. I guess I have some more learning to do. Thanks for the input.

Hey Hilty,

If you were an HPTuner's guy I could work with you through email. I don't have the archive needed to remotely work through EFI Live, which is why I originally told you that you'd need to talk to an EFI Live tuner to get some help.

Sorry.

Thanks Steve. At this point I've got too much invested to change to HPTuners now. Oh well. One question though - have you had success with your mail-order tunes as far as bucking goes?

It's a MAIL ORDER TUNE. You can't expect it to be perfect. It's intended to get you close.

FWIW, if you need EFIlive help let me know. I can work with you, or remote tune it, whatever.

I didn't expect my mail-order tune to be perfect. But I expected to be able to do some fine-tuning on my own and dial it in. It's worked out quite well for the most part. It fired right up, idled ok. I think I've made some gains but I have a lot to learn to get rid of the bucking. Maybe I'll never get it myself, there are so many variables. So I appreciate your offer to help and/or remote tune. Cheers.
