Angry I need help with big cam idle tuning

Here's what I've tried so far...

main VE
400 rpm x 60
800 rpm x 85
1200 rpm x 90

IAC park
40C and up to 21

Idle air in gear
all points from 60C and up to 8.6

increased timing by 5 deg from 0-1200 rpm on all timing tables up to .52 g/cyl

the cam is a 228/236 112. I'm still having major problems with the idle. It always wants to surge and stall and is hard to start. I'm so sick of this, I seriously want to put the stock cam back in the car. What else can I try?

It took damn near 14 hours to tune my car, and my cold starts are still rough. It is no easy task. You really need a good tuner.

I can help you out but you'll need to send me a copy of your file. That way I can see exactly what your settings are. Also send a stock file too so I can compare.I'll send back an adjusted one you can look at and see how it works out for you.

I found NoGo's tuning tips help but it isn't the solve-all for idle issues. Each car and cam will need it's own tweaks.

You really need to scan the car while it's running to get an idea if your lean or rich and adjust the VE table accordingly. You'll also need to know where your IAC counters are at.

My cam is a TR230 (230/224 111LSA) and the NoGo tweaks got me semi-close but I've put in MANY hours since to get it to idle nicely at 850 and I'm still tweaking it.

There's isn't any easy and quick tweak to get your car to idle but don't give up hope.

I'll try to shoot you a link to my HP Tuners file (LS1 Edit can open .bin files) later tonight or tomorrow (I have to upload it first to my web share). If I forget, send me a PM to remind me.

Depending on your IAC's, you may need to open your throttle blade a little (or drill it which I don't prefer.) I found a 3/32's allen wrench works with the Torx screw in the TB for easy and quick adjustments.

Areas I adjusted were:
400 - 1200 VE table.
Target idle speed increased.
Running airflow increased.
IAC park position increased.
Throttle follower decay tables essentially disabled (value of 31).
Added timing.

With a cam that size, you may never get a perfect idle unless you put the car in open loop, at least for the low rpms. Nogo will tell you that. If you are having more trouble that others with your same cam, make sure you have no exhaust leaks close to the O2 sensors.

There should be no problem tuning closed loop with a Cam like this.It is actually pretty small. The thing is it takes a little work to get it perfect, open loop is easier to get right fast but I'm still not sold on open loop tuning yet.I've personally have seen no gains with going open loop compared to a good closed loop tune.

I agree, I only sugested open loop because he was getting to the end of his rope. Also, I believe you can run open loop for idle only, and run closed loop the rest of the time.
