Default 68 C10 Tuning

My 68 C10 chronicles, I'll see if I can keep all my info to one thread so I can find it later.

This LS swap started out with all stock 5.7/4L60e from a 98 Camaro. Only changes from stock would be the intake tubing/filter to fit into the truck and then the exhaust manifolds from a TBSS, then through 2.25" exhaust to the rear of the truck. Put 17k miles on it that way. Only tuning besides all the normal deleting of emissions and VATS was supposed to be a small timing change.

I then changed out that motor for a LM4 5.3 block that was bored to 5.7 with Mahle forged pistons and Gen4 rods, ported 862 heads and a Z06(5308) cam. Same intake/exhaust combination. No further ECM tuning has been done. Yes it is running lean, very lean.

So, today I just got my HPtuners and LC2 wideband connected to my truck to start the new tuning process. I might be in over my head though.

I think that I have got it figured out how to log and save a file. Took a while to get the WB to display in the guages and chart vs time displays. Still havent got it to display in the graph correctly yet, but haven't tried really and don't know what to graph yet anyways.

Anybody care to take a quick look at a file, basically trying to make sure I can post a file properly. This is just a very short file for testing, but feel free to comment on anything that might help. Thanks

Truck runs really well like it is. I am actually seeing a temperature/cooling issue that I kinda think is tune related. Slow cruising(under 2k rpm) in town and the motor gets warmer than I think it should, fans on too long(opinion). Manually select a gear low enough to increase the RPM to about 2k and it cools right off and the fans turn off. So, I think its one of two things. 1. low coolant flow at low rpm. 2. timing or AFR issue causing heat. This started with the second motor listed, no issues with the first motor(same tune).

Your short term fuel trims look good except for a couple cells but those cells had very few hits. You need to setup a histogram with wb-ve error and another for wb-maf error and tune each individually. Do have the pro hptuners? That will make setting it up easier. I always tune my ve first then Maf. Just remember when you tune ve you have to fail maf and when you copy your #'s to your primary ve table you also have to copy the even # lines to the secondary ve table. Here is a good tuning guide: http://www.michigansnowmobiler.com/h...ons%20rev2.pdf

Thanks for taking a look at my files. I am using HP pro. However this is the very first time that I have used it, so complete rookie to tuning. I will have to do some research about how to set up a histogram and also do figure out how to disable the MAF for ve tuning.

Quick glance through that tuning guide looks like it will help a lot. Thanks for that link.

It takes a lot of reading and time but once you figure it out it's not so bad. I think with the pro you might already have the right histograms. I don't have the pro so i had to make mine to use through my egr port. I am also on the older version of Hptuner. Have you been to Hptuner's forum? You should find what you need there.

Yup, posted the same thing on HP's forum. 49 views and no replies.

However, My main goal was to make sure that I could properly post a file for people to review. I'm not necessarily looking for help yet, I haven't done enough research on my own to be asking for much help. Now, knowing I can post a proper file if I get stumped, time to study what I have to work with. Steep learning curve so far. I didn't buy HPpro and a wideband to get spoon fed though.

Thank you for you help so far.

Ok, I'm having a couple of issues getting my HPtuner to cooperate. They are probably related to each other too.
First, Whenever I open the editor, I get a pop-up error.

The Second issue is that once a file has been read(and saved), it appears as if I can make changes, but i never get an option or ability to then upload the new file. The "write vehicle" option is grey'd out at all times.

Here is the error message..

"Unhandled exception has occurred in your application. If you click Continue. the application will ignore this error and attempt to continue. If you click Quit, the application will close immediately.

See the end of this message for details on invoking
just-in-time (JIT) debugging instead of this dialog box.

When you make changes are you saving the file as new one with a new name? Not sure about your first problem but they could be related. Up in the editor top right corner there is a file icon and you click on save as and then you put a new name for file. If you click the save button you will write over the tune you made the changes on and lose the original.

Yes, made my changes and saved file with a new name. That's when I realized that I could not upload the new file. Had not paid any attention to the icon being "grey'd" out before.

Only thing I can think to do with the initial problem would be to delete all of HP off of my computer and try to reload all of it and see if it works properly.

Are you attached to the car when this happens and connected with key on and it is still gray?

Just looking at the tunes on your laptop it is gray without the hp box connected.

Yes, connected to the car with the key on.

Each time I connect to the truck, it wants me to read the ECU and save a file each time. So, I have multiple unchanged files saves right now. But, I never get the icon to upload the new file.

Before I bought my own copy of HPtuners, I was paying a shop to take care of the initial things associated with a swap like VATS, EGR, rear O2's, speedo correction. I was in the vehicle each time the shop did a new flash, so I am pretty convinced that it is not a problem with the ECU.

A quick Google search with "HPtuners String reference not set to an instance of a String" shows that I am not the only person to be getting this error.

I would contact hptuners and see if your hp has some kind of bug.
