Default For n/a cammed cars, what do you aim for idle?

My camaro has a 227/232 114lsa cam, so fairly mild in terms of overlap. Right now I have warm idle set to 850, but I'm curious what others have theirs at, and how mild/aggressive their cams are.

I like to shoot for 850-900 rpm on manual trans cars and 775-850 rpm on auto trans stuff with tight converters.

226/230 113 on a LS6, idled fine at 800 and I didnt' bother trying to go any lower as that was stock rpm for the car.

There's no right or wrong answer, just do what you like and what the engine wants.

A lot of people idle as low as they can because they like the lope sound. Personally, I like the engine to be snappy so I aim for a higher idle speed. My last two 427 engines idled at 1050 rpm with 20 degrees of overlap. Most people think it's much lower by the sound.

232/234 @ 112, so 9 degrees of overlap, LS6 so 5.7L, 850 RPM

It barely sounds cammed. There are plenty of videos on YouTube from LS1/LS6s with smaller cams that sound a lot more aggressive, I assume that's from a lower idle speed and creative underspeed/overspeed idle timing compensations.

FWIW. I could get the 428 to idle at 650, but it made off idle lazier. I liked the way it drove at 975 idle speed. That was on a 248/255

My 346 on a 237/245 likes to idle at 975

Edit - light clutch so that influenced it some I am sure

That's kinda what I think about my setup. I finally got it back together yesterday and messed with the basic stuff. But I do think it will drive better at a higher idle speed.

I want dat race car idle tune

I was thinking of playing with mine and dropping it a touch. It's not bad at 850 (almost has a nice rhythmic thump to it) but I'm curious how much choppier I can get it at 800 or 750.

A higher idle speed can help if your hitting a resonance of something in the chassis causing it to vibrate or rattle. Even a bump of 50 rpm's can fix it. Having the added vacuum is a nice benefit of a more stable idle too.

226/232 110 LSA on a 4.8 on E85 starts to surge if I idle it below 900-950 hot, so I idle at 1000.
It also revs much much cleaner idling at 1000 than 900, and has less issues idling in gear.
Vibration is a lot less at 1000 than 900. I see no reason to lower the idle.

my cam has 88 degrees of overlap and i idle it at 850-1000 very reliably. it could be much smoother but i tweaked some stuff in the tune to make it sound 'better'

Yeah it didn't have any trouble holding idle. Crazy that it has that much overlap.

468 inches eat it up. it runs like *** under any kind of load below 2000rpm, but its never stalled(except when i mess up the third pedal) or hesitated and the throttle response is insanely quick. i put 3.90s in it and its worlds better, i still dont shift to 6th until 70 and can go 90 at like 2400rpm but its way better around town and you know, its my only driver so thats important

Is it wrong that I'm seriously impressed??? Is that seat to seat or at 050?

its approximate seat to seat. i know the 050 and lift numbers but not the actual lobe or manufacturer, so i cross referenced to comps lobe catalog and found a couple examples of lobes matching the 050 and lift and used those advertised numbers to calculate my valve events. im blindly confident that it is within a few degrees of 88 at worst. i mean, it idles at 84-87kpa. i am in the middle of completely reworking my eoit tables, so im hoping to at least pick up a little bit of economy. it gets 15 highway now...
