Default Dart LS Next 427 Initial Timing

Just finished and installed my Dart LS Next 427 build and need help with base timing parameters. I have read and watched lots of tuning videos recommending an idle timing of ~24 degrees and all in at 31 degrees by 3500 rpm. Given the intake and heads I don't see a lot of reason to spin it past 6500 rpm. I am not intending to race, just cruise and show mostly, some burnouts of course. Any insights or recommendations are greatly appreciated.

Im all for diy, but please dont hurt this motor over basic tuning perameters. There are some really good remote tuners who will work with you and teach you along the way too.

My buddy has a similar motor with a bigger cam and he started with a base timing of 19 degrees.

LS motors don't need timing like the old SBC motors. On my last one we did a lot of dyno runs stepping the timing up a degree at a time until we stopped making power. I don't have the tune in front of me, but we ended up around 25 degrees total max power. And it wasn't constant, meaning we dropped timing during some of the RPM range (around peak torque) and picked it back up again in upper RPM. That was our best curve.

I experimented a lot with my idle timing anywhere between 20 and 25 degrees. I ended up around 20-21, that was what the engine liked.

I know you are using a FAST ECU, but I highly suggest spending some time on the Holley support forums. There are some great writeups in the HP EFI and Dominator forums about tuning in general, specifically when it comes to idle tuning. You can learn a ton reading those which will also apply to your FAST.

Good luck.

Great suggestion on the Holley forum. Thanks. The FAST forum was out of date and appears to be taken down. The FAST EZ is unique in that you have a screen on the hand held to set the base and max timing. All the remainder of the timing table is hidden and filled in with the adaptive learning. I used a vacuum gauge to find the max vacuum (28 inches) at 900 rpm and them backed it down 4 degrees now.

Same experience here on LS7 heads. I started at 21 degrees to be "safe". Ended up at 24. Going to 26 didn't KR, but didn't make additional power either.

I didn't read carefully enoughto notice that you are using the EZ version of the FAST. You have less overall control of the timing in that case, but I still think you should target less total than you were thinking.

I owned a FAST many years ago because any of the auto-learning systems were available. I wrote my own application to use log files to 'auto tune' my fuel timings which is similar to what the FAST EZ does I believe (and Holley as well now). It's not hard, just look at the correction factor on fuel vs. the target and adjust from there. Timing isn't so easy though.

Good luck.
