Question Throwing codes left and right today- HELP, PCM GURUS!!!

I have been dealing with a sporadic check engine light for almost a month now, it has spent more time on than off in recent days. Put it on a scanner and it recorded these codes in succession:


1. P0171- System too lean Bank 1
2. P0174- System too lean Bank 2
3. P0300- Random multiple cylinder missfire detected
4. P0171- System too lean bank 1
5. P0174- System too lean bank 2


I was thinking that the problem is either the fuel pump is going, the injectors are dirty, or the car needs new plugs (or a combination of those.)

What do you guys think? I really need help, I want to get the damn light off ASAP!!!

Fuel pressure check will tell whether it's the
pump/filter but doing this under load is not
so easy.

MAF molestation, K&N filter oil-spooge are
other possibilities (just how mostly, is
mostly?) if these are present.

Plugs will not cause lean codes but lean
operation will elevate misfire counts.

Well, my MAF is a GMS unit, I havent oiled the filter lately (at all ) Could the injectors use a cleaning?

Your GMAF is a known bad actor (lean-out by
design) and it might want a cleaning if you have
been running a K&N. But, what it wants most is
proper tuning I expect. GMAF is a voodoo tune
for cars that run factory rich. 2000 models are
stuck with small injectors and a leaner "natural"
tune than the rich '98s that the GMAF (maybe)
helps.

Not to dissuade you from other preventive maintenance
but there's no point in dancing around the problem.
That MAF is a misfit to your model (and most others).
GMS is the only folks who claim different... funny, huh?

How do I clean the MAF? I have never even thought of doing that before. Thanks for all your help!

Ditto on the GMS MAF. I ran it on my 98 and it caused the same exact codes minus the random misfire. I switched back to a stock desrceened (unported) MAF and the codes cycled away as did the bad idle and lean condition.

What about my year (99) is the GMMAF a bad idea for my year or not? I havent had any problems out of it ever, do I need to spray it with carb cleaner every once in a while?

Buddy's car had those codes and it was a vaccum leak, EGR gasket at the manifold had somehow twisted in his case. We could hear it when we poped the hood. He had a home ported MAF that we replaced also, just in case. His LTrims were like +25 on both sides.

Seemed to help- the lean codes are gone, but it threw a cylinder 2 miss on the way home from cleaning the maf. It looks like it'll be ok now.
