Default using HpTuners on another year...

Ok.. i searched and searched.. nothing came up, but maybe im not wording it right.. I have heard someone on this site talk about programing with HPTuners, and that you can simply use a different vin number if your vehicle isnt the same year as the lisence on the software is for.. What is going on is that I finally found a local guy that will flash my BIN file for me.. I have had this file on my computer for months, someone here was kind enough to do that for me.. then a guy at Dutch Miller was supposed to flash it for me with his HPTuners, (he had a 98 like me).. Well he sold me my wifes car and vanished.. so never got it flashed.. There is now a guy close by on a local forum that has offered to flash it.. he has a 01 T/A.. I have a 98 T/A.. if/how can we make it work??

It wants licensed for your model*year. I don't know
of any way to fool it although I've seen people report
getting into trouble by flashing an OS from another
year, don't know all the details on that. Short answer
would be, pony up the $199 and put it on his cable,
maybe offer to split the bill or something if he's not
keen to acquire that year on his own.

Or maybe you want to keep an eye out for your own
used '98 copy. That would run you more, but you'd
have control of your situation.

If you had a spare PCM to get by with, or can take
the down time, there are people around who will do
a tune on it by mail, some seem to be pretty fair
in price and include do-overs (I won't name names as
I think there's no sponsorship here, but it would not
be too hard to run across them in the tuning forums
of various sites if you looked). I'd be real choosy if
you go this way, some clowns like to lock -your-
PCM after doing work for hire, which is not cool in
my book.

Or since EFI Live offers free flasing of all 1998 F-cars with any copy of flashscan, try to find somebody local who has a copy. For this reason, you can probaly find either a used Flashscan cable, or a 98 only HPtuners cable for a reasonable price.

Well it looks like what I should do is get two of my buddies to go in with me to purchase the whole thing.. 499.00 right?? that comes with all we need except the laptop?? Me and Steve both have 98's.. and Brian has a 01, on the site it says when you order HpTuners you get two vehicles right?? instead of me spending 200 to get one flash done, I can spend 165 (split 3 ways) and get the whole package and tune all I want..

the 99-02 fbodies had identical wiring harness pinouts. they use identical PCM hardware.

you can flash any 99-02 PCM to be any other year of 99-02 fbody... and then tune it with HPtuners.

however, you cant do that with 98s... 98s are unique in both wiring and possibly hardware..

Unless something has changed, I don't believe via HPTuners you can reflash a PCM that you don't have the license for. For example, if you have licenses for 99 and 01, and you want to flash the 99 to a 01, you can, but if you want a flash a 00 to a 01, you can't. Course, last time I did that I was using 1.6 or 1.7, so I'm not familiar with what 2.0 can do in this regard.

that still applies.

but you can get your buddy, or someone online, to flash that PCM to one you do have HPtuners for, then you're able to tune it all you want.
