Default Car won't idle.. is this because of the lsa on the new cam??

well, after 10 weeks of downtime.. i finally got her back together. I went from a MTI B1 to a MMS 229/229 566/566 112 cam, as well as Grot LT's and P&P'ed heads (2.02 1.56 ferra valves. The car will start (giving it some throttle) but as soon as i let out of the gas is will die and make a very very loud backfire (it set off car alarms down at the end of my street) that and it's smoking a little, prolly due to all the fluids and the fact it's been 2 1/2 months since it was fired up.

I already have a Shaner (s2) TB and it idled really well with the B1, should i just keep it running for a while?? wait and try to get it re-tuned for the lower lsa on this cam??

any ideas on what to do now???

Hey Devin, I don't know if you know that I already have the G5 cam in. I think it is a bit bigger than the MMS229 cam you have. But it idles very good.
I have the following settings:
LS1-edit PCM idle settings: 900 in gear and 975 in park. Base timings in park and gear are lowered a bit (don't remember what they're right now)
S2 TB blade is drilled by Shaner (so I don't know the size).
The screw on the TB is raised about 1 turn.

hey Sonny, is that G5 a 112lsa??
Last time it was tuned, i had BVPerf. set the idle at 900 as well.. but it still won't idle.
I guess I'm more concerned with the really loud backfires when it dies.. sound like a thunderbolt hit my house.

Yup, it is 112 lsa.
I've learned that the PCM idle settings alone won't help the car idle.
But w/ such loud backfire, there may be other issues.

I thought the MMS 229 was on a 114. Is that an older version of the cam?

I would try 950 or 975 rpm idle and check to make sure the IAC count when the engine is fully warmed up is in the 20 - 40 range.

Also check your LTRIMS once you get running. you may need to tweak the MAF rate at the low end.

If you continue to backfire, you have some issues.

Nothing fancy required.
pull the PCM BAT and PCM IGN fuses while you do the exhuast work. Then just fire it up and let it idle for a couple minutes in park, in reverse, and in gear and you'll be fine. Let idle for a couple minutes with the A/C on too.

ok, i have some serious timing issues... car will not idle no matter what i do.. the engine is shaking really bad.. and when i hold the throttle down at around 1100-1200 my A/F gauge is reading really lean. From what i have read and heard from the guy i bought the cam from.. he said there is a certain amount of timing that the cam has ground into it?? the last time i dyno tuned my timing was advanced like 4 degrees.. and i'm thinking with this cam.. theres nothing i can do without tuning.. it won't idle.. and it backfires like crazy.. i tried the TB and the re-learn.. and nothing makes it run without backfiring and sputtering really really bad.

anyone make house calls?? as if i try to put it into drive (any gear) i will surely rip my tranny up.. as well as maybe drive through my house.

this really sux.. as i've spent around 10k this year already and my wife is gonna kill me if i have to pay for another re-tune. ...

arghhhhhh!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Backfires are probably not tuning caused. I'll bet you have a mechanical issue (e.g. vacuum leak, bad 02 Sensor) that is causing this.

I'd post in the internal engine section a topic stating "Backfires after Cam Install" or something like that and see what comes up. Be sure to list all your mods.

I see that the problem was traced to a Mechanical Problem - reversed coil pack.

Tuning rarely causes BIG problems...it's the little annoying ones.
