Question What would make "Absolute TPS" read 17.4% at IDLE?

This is my neighbor's 2000 Z28.

Bone stock car that has intermittent misfire but no codes.

I was just nosing around the scanner and saw that the "Absolute TPS %" was showing 17.4% at idle.

Checking my 2000 Camaro SS, I saw .4%, which is what I also saw on my 97 Chevy Truck...

What would make TPS reading register so high on STOCK vehicle?

Could this have anything to do with misfire?

It seems to misfire under load at light throttle, like when cruising at highway speed and approaching an incline or similar circumstance. Spark plugs were replaced, as was fuel filter and even tranny fluid changed...no difference.

Any ideas or suggestions???

No, I used a scanner, which read right on the 3 other vehicles I used it on the same day though.

I would first check the throttle body and make sure the blade is closing. It should touch the stop screw. The stop screw could also make off. You could also take the air cleaner off and check to make sure the throttle blade is closing.
It could also be an air leak that would cause a high idle.

It should read around 0.x %. My 2001 reads close to yours .4%.

Good luck.

I recently had to replace the TPS on my car, because after I had driven it for a little while, the sensor would stick at 10ish%. The blade was touching the stop too. Replaced the sensor, worked fine.

Hey guy's, sorry to bring this one back up, but I was wondering if you ever figured this one out. Mine is at 12% and I am getting the same missfire under light load. I have also noticed that if I drop the o2 sensors it cleans up a lot but is still there. I had a knock sensor code so I replaced both of those. And I have a new set of o2s and coil packs on the way. But I only noticed this today. Also it's idling around the 1200rpm mark. If i pull the tps wore off it drops to 700ish but runs really bad like it wants to stall.

thanks heaps, clay

Hey Guys I have A 2003 Chevy Silverado 5.3 Been Having lack of Performance Issues So I Bought A Scanner Trying To Learn What’s Cause These Problems & I Have the absolute TPS reading at 18.1% at idle, I Have Little To No Mecanic Experience & If I’m Understanding Correctly 18.1% Is Not Good While At Idle. Need Help Been Spending To Much At Dealer Repairman Trying To Tackle This D.I.Y. Now Can Anyone Tell Me What I Should Do?

Having Consistent random misfires with no check engine light and had to replace two knock sensors when Diagnosed By the dealer, a month later and it’s been getting worse Also One of my catalytic converter’s went out I replaced it with an aftermarket one and it’s looking a little blackish on the outside Wondering If It’s Normal? Any Advice On How To Fix These Issues Helps Thanks In Advance.🙏🏼
