It's a real strong motor, I'd say it's got all of it's rated 290hp. It pulls real good, traction is near impossible. It's a fun car to drive. I've owned it for 5 years, I bought it from my Uncle (he's the original owner)

Default Not anymore, but a while ago...

Back in the 70's and 80's my dad had an original 1961 Catalina 421 Super Duty (hence MY ID - as I thought that particular 421 was pretty Great!) - it was a 4 speed car with 5.33 gears and 8 lugs - painted up like Fireball Roberts' NASCAR unit, Black with gold strips.

That car really made an impression on me! So much so that MY 61 Ventura made it onto the cover of POCI's magazine two years ago!

My next Firebird will be a Yellow 73 Formula SD clone with a manual - probably an aftermarket 535 ci block and a 6 speed!

I love the Catalina 421SD! It was literally a drag car sold to the public, infact the disclaimer sold with every SD said not recommended for street use, the motor doesn't just like to cruise..

People have put them on the dyno and the numbers were anywhere between 375-390 to the wheels with over 450lb/tq. I think stock they ran 13.1-2 1/4 mile, spinning fighting for traction for the first 1/8th. I really don't beat on this car, let alone drive it much.... That's what the SS is for

I wish, it's an Automatic. I think they only made 72 Manual and 180 Automatics. I believe there are less than 5 Manual Brewster SD's made. I only know of a couple to exist today. I wish it was a 4-Speed, but I'll settle for the Auto.

my dad has a 73 formula 455 but was custom ordered from pontiac by my uncle... it has the 455 SD block with formula 455 heads and manifolds. (we have all the stamp codes to prove it) its a hurst 4 speed, rear spoiler delete, ram air, and some other stupid options.... 61K on the clock. i can have pictures up later.

I love SD cars--74 more so but still they are nice.

Last fast car out of Detroit 74-87 I think.

You are overstating the real power and times though.
A 4 speed might do a mid 13 and auto high 13 to low 14s.

I have heard 370hp at the flywheel. No way it was making that at the wheels.
