Why do the brass gears break the white plastice stops?
I just ordered the brass gears and I plan to install them on both sides this weekend. Is it only a matter of time before the plastic stops are broken?

I think I ordered some before, but I'm not sure. I wold just call your local dealer. Or you can get some used ones from a junkyard. People part out cars here on these forums from time to time, you mght get some from them. Especially if it's a front end crash.
The best preventive maintinence I can give you is to make sure the metal arm swings around and contacts the middle area of the plastic stop. If it contact's the tip, then the plastic piece might get sheared in two.

Well, I replaced the gear on one side (even though I ordered both gears, I only had time for one this weekend) and the motor works like a charm. I also checked out the stop and it looks like the good contact picture above, so I think I'm good to go. As a plus, I think I adjusted the gear to stop just as the arm makes contact with the stopper so that it's not drilling into it.
Anyways, long story short, the new gear works great.

Just installed my passenger side gear and I noticed that NOW, when I rotate the switch for the headlights once, it no longer swings the lights up. When I turn it to the 2nd position, they swing up & the lights come on. If I rotate it BACK to the 1st position, they lights will turn off & the whole headlight will stay up, as they should.
Is this how it should be? Or what?
Is this a signifier that something may fail prematurely a little bit down the line?

On my 2nd replacement headlight motor now, thank god it has lifetime warranty, the latest one only lasted about 3 days. I properly installed everything. The only thing left is the wiring harness that has not been changed. I looked at the contacts that hook up to the headlight motor and they were all green and coroded. Anyone know the part number for the driver side wiring harness for the headlamp?

This website in the link lays out step-by-step instructions & pictures for fixing the problem. It also answers a ton of questions. http://www.bfranker.badz28.com/headl...htgearfailures

FYI, FWIW, not that Brent's parts aren't great but another alternative is in your local parts store look for the section with the loose carded parts stuff titled HELP! in the red cards, item # 42400 is the plastic version of our gears, around $10 per gear, YMMV.
Bypass the electrical connector when you replace the motor and connect the wires directly together.
On those cheap replacement motors, will they honor the warranty if you cut the connector off? I know the Pontiac dealer will bypass the connector. Maybe that will make it last longer.

any ideas?
i am just about done with these headlights. passenger motor not working right. heres what i did.
original motor replaced, due to grinding noise, and not working always.
second motor installed, works, but not in sync. tried reseting manually, pulled fuse, loosened arm turned by hand 180,replaced headlamp module, still not in sync. driver up-passenger down, vice versa.
re-install original, it works, i can deal with the grinding for now. nope, now original motor not in sync.try resetting like i did above, no good.
take second motor back for exchange, for third motor. install third motor, nothing at all. no vice-versa. no movement nothing. reinstall original headlamp module, same thing nothing.
been at this for two days, almost 12 hours. any ideas? i really would appreciate any help or suggestions.
