Just curious if anybody knows if the 98-02 Trans Ams came with window tint from the factory or was it dealer installed ?

I have a 98 WS6 and it appears like it has dealer installed tint (tint edge on side window) ? The factory stickers are applied to the inside glass on the driver's side. Just curious if most of these cars had dealer installed tint or did a lighter tint come from the factory that was part of the glass ?

I believe it was all dealer installed. Factory tint is different than your typical glue on sheets of plastic.

If you can PEEL it off then it's not factory tint.

One of our Firebirds came with factory tint, as I recall I found the code on the door. Let me see if I can find that and let you know what code to look for.

I believe the tint to be 3M, it looks the same as I had installed on my 5th gen Camaro done in, was not cheap either.



Look for AAA on the door codes, that is factory tint.

Also adding a pic....appears that at factory decals are placed inside the window on the outside of the window film. My guess based on all the info is that the tint is dealer installed (3M film ?).

The only "factory" tint for these cars was the t-tops, and as stated above this is colored glass that cannot be peeled off. Other than that, there was no tint option for the hatch or door glass beyond the standard glass that every one of them came with.

RPO AAA is not listed as factory tint. Several of mine have had this RPO and none of them had anything darker than standard factory glass. I bought two of them new so I would certainly know if they had come tinted.

RPO AA3 would indicate deep tinted glass, but I have never see this RPO on a 4th gen before.

One of my Birds has code AAA and is tinted, but we did buy it used and as mentioned it does have T-Tops.

The physical glass itself is tinted . Not one single fbody ever made came with factory applied external tint. Any external tint was done at a dealer or tint shop period. I can't count how many of these cars we sold and I drooled over every single one as they came in and went out and a grand total of NONE ever had external tint off the transport truck.

RPO AAA has been used for "4-way manual seat adjuster" and "Standard Safety Features/Additional Standard Equipment" over the last ~30 years.

I bought my 2000 Trans Am brand new, and it had RPO AAA, and it did not have any tinting paper, nor windows any darker than any other 4th gen F-body.

Technically, all of these cars came with somewhat tinted glass, as the glass is something like 70% VLT in stock form (slightly colored). Totally clear glass would be like 90%+ VLT, and that is not how any of these cars came.

Having said that, there was NO factory option for dark/deep tint (such as the dark rear windows on trucks/SUVs/Mini-vans) beyond the standard window color for these cars. And there was definitely no factory option for tinting paper on those vehicles that offer deep tint (such as RPO AA3 or AJ1.) Factory "tinting" is actual colored glass, such as the t-tops.
