Default My 85 T/A Recaro Option

Didnt know there was a place for birdies here.

This Trans Am is equipped with all the best original performance options available. WS6 305 TPI, Auto, 3:27 Posi 9 Bolt, 16" wheels, and four wheel disk brakes, in addition to T-Tops, cruise control, performance sound, power windows, and the Recaro Seat Option. Pontiac's 1985 sales brochure called the 1985 Trans Am WS6 "the most serious piece of machinery we put on the road."

Very nice, I really dig the extra vents on the hood. 85 didn't have a 350 option huh? You should transplant in a 91-92 L98 into that, muuuch more power from that year 350, especially compared to that year 305. Nice find though, very clean.

Thanks! 350 wasn’t offered until 87 in the Fbody.

Right now I just have the handful of free reversible mods, Flowmaster, Airfoil, TPI coolant bypass, 170 Tstat. 85 was the first year for the TPI and used the cam from the L-81 vette. 86 they went to the “peanut” cam and lost HP. Although the 305 gets little respect an 85 TPI will surprise you, it has some real grunt. I used to have another 85 w/ the HO motor, 9bolt 3:77 (?) and WS6. They only made 1600 HO T/A’s in 85 and even less w/WS6. I sold it as I needed the flow and it had front end damage. That 5 sp was fun!

I wont change anything else on it as the West Coast editor of Hemmings Muscle Car want to come and shoot it for a possible feature

nice car... i had a 3rd gen, formula 350 with the L98.. IMO the L98 is still a gutless dog.

to me, the 3rd gen is all about the look, not the performance... and yours looks great!~

PMD logged a .92G in the skidpad w/ an 85 WS6, I guess that could count as a level of performance, it will bust your kidney too, stiff ride indeed.

I don't think the L98 was a dog. The motors have similar numbers to an LT1, they just don't rev as high. Lower HP, but higher TQ, so it sort of equals out. I loved mine. Then again I had a 91 when the L98 was at it's highest power.

Wow, a blast from my high school past. The 85's came out the fall of my junior year. I still really like a clean 3Gen f-body. I like the period-correct rear hatch louvres, too. Nice looking ride!

well i mean by the books, yes.. but it's no contest. you can't compare the 2 like that.

the LT1 smokes the L98.. .and only offering the L98 with a crappy 700r4 really killed it.

again.. i've owned both as well.

I thought the offered that 'junk' 6spd that was offered in the 93 F-Bodies?

And I'm sure I don't have to tell you that a "crappy" 700R4 is a 4L60E minus electronics heh So not liking one, is not liking the other.

you need not tell me. i am fully aware of the 4L60e, and the 700R4 being close cousins.

both are crap. i don't like either.... at all.

people should learn to drive stick.

Person knows how to drive a stick, was going to buy an M6 but couldn't find one close. Only one was not to my liking. Had a "rebuilt" motor that had a front intake gasket leak. Didn't want to deal with that crap. And unless you're one hell of a driver, the A4s are faster at the track ^_^

EDIT: Gah silly me, it wasn't the 6spd it was the 5spd the put in the 3rd gens.

Of all the cars I've owned, my 85 T/A was my favorite. I had the 5 speed l69 carb option. When the secondaries opened up, it was just heaven. At the time that car was the **** on the street. Nowadays it would probably get smoked by a new Nissan Sentra.

Not to mention the TPI intake looks badass, much better looking engine than the LT1

agreed... it's sick.

when i was 16 and popped the hood on my L98 TPI it was quite a feeling... it looks back-to-the-future style. i actually painted the slots in the upper plenum pontiac blue.. it was a nice touch on a red car.

the LT1/LS1 are both ugly.... but i'll take ugly power rather than the attractive boat anchor in my old '89

Looks nice, sure, but the TPI > that LSx setup as far as looks by a LOT. Sorry

I like how the 93 LT1s look since they don't have the ugly fuel rail cross-over in front. I miss the ease of being able to port the upper plenum for a 58mm TB though from the TPI A few bolts and bam, it's off! I siamesed everything, even the TB port, I could've ran a mono-blade if I wanted.
