Default What is a 79 TA worth?

I have to find out how much my dad's car is worth or he is going to get rid of it. Here's the specs:

*1979 Trans Am
*Pontiac 400
*4-Speed
*WS6
*Gold Edition
*Black w/ Tan Interior
*Lots of miles, but pretty much all original

Any help would be great. I would rather my dad give me the car to restore than him sell it for way less than what it is worth. Thanks

See he wants to sell it for ~$2000, but if I could show him that it is actually worth something he might actually want to keep it, which would mean that eventually I get it.

Those 2 things alone make it worth more than about any other '79 TA. The only thing worth more would be if it were a 10th anniversary edition. '79 TAs are no longer depreciating, so you can only gain by keeping it. Check NADA's CPI (Cars of Particular Interest) price guide. I'd be guessing 8-10K.

79's were the biggest selling year,,,they made over 10000 SE TA's that year,,,,does it have T-Tops? Guessing that it does, your proably looking at 1 of 1107 SE TA's (i dont know if the gold ones have their own numbers, and im using Gary Lisk's 2nd gen page) either way, good luck, i would love to own an older one,,,nothing against my 2000, but to have a 73 would be a miracle,,,banks dont like to give loans for to not so perfect credit folks, for 30 year old cars.
Good Luck!!!

A buddy of mine had a 79 TA exactly like the one your describing.. It was Black/Black cloth,no bird(he didn't want one).400,4spd.. Depending on the mileage,if its like 150,000 I would guess about 6 g's.. I would way rather have my 99 TA..The older TA's t-tops leaked like a siv also..When I had my 87 Iroc,tpi 5spd,I would destroy that 79 TA,it wasn't even a race..I can't imagine what my 99 TA would do to it..

I've seen low mileage `79 W72's go for over $20K
Buddy of mine has a 40K mile Original Black on Black `79 W72 w/T-tops 1 of 2917
He was offered $15K about 10 Yrs Ago.

If he is going to sell it buy it yourself, thats an awesome car with tons of potential.

If it were that easy, I would. But I don't have the money to buy it from him. The only way I will get it is if he gives it to me. Being in the military doesn't pay very well.

And I did race him when I first got my 99 TA and it was pretty close, he has had extensive porting and polishing of the heads and cam work done With some more tweaks, it could be even faster. That will have to wait until I have more funds though.

And you obviously have no idea what this car is. Sure they made thousands with 403s and thousands that were automatics. There were also a ton of non-WS6 cars made too. Opinions on what year was best are irrelevant, I posted to aid in finding the value of THIS car.

ummm i obviously do. and i think my guess of 8k was right on the money. if you're so bitter and clearly know the answers, what's the reason for your post??????????

if the car was concourse quality with very low miles it's a different beast alltogether.

79 is not a classic year. to have the most classic of a non-classic still does not mean much.

just because YOU think it's rare desireable does not grant it value or legitamacy. you have to separate emotional attachment and personal opinion from actual cash value.

my comment on the 73 was only to give contrast//// my favorite or not, a '73 is worth more.

If it's an SE and it's a W72 4 spd, 8k is probably low unless the car is bad shape. Post pics of the car and the cowl plate if you can. Does the car have the build sheet? It would either be under one of the front seats or behind the rear seat. There's also a build sheet on top of the gas tank but you'll have to drop it to get it out.

Does the car have rust? If it does, the value only goes down.

Clean, original SEs will normally bring over $10k. If it needs a lot of work, then that hurts it.

Before you start spewing incorrect information, why don't you either research the market or keep your opinion to yourself. The fact that this car is a 400, 4-speed car makes it rare and desireable. One look on E-Bay or recent auctions would show you that the 1979 with the right options is worth a lot more than you think. There is a large following of these cars. The market for all 2nd gens has been increasing quite a bit.

There are better websites for 2nd gens, too. Try Performance Years [http://forums.performanceyears.com/forums/] or Trans Am Country [http://transamcountry.com/community/]. Both are very good.

79 W72 cars as mentioned are held in high regard. Im confused tho cause you mention "Gold Edition" but add that its black /tan. I think you mean it has the gold trim?

The Gold S/E was a 78 car and was designated Y88
