Default 2009 G8 GT DOD removal?

Guys, I am working late and don't have too much time to search and tomorrow morning I am looking at an 09 G8 GT to replace my SRT8. How much $$ is it to ditch the DOD? I have just read it's a PITA? New cam (needed anyway, Pat G ), valley cover and timing chain..? Any quick input would be great guys.

Thanks-

Its only about $1500 and well worth the cost. It does require pulling the heads and installing anew cam but I plan on doing the swap in mine next weekend.

My DoD works fine.......
Been 12.20 @115 on street tires and 11.38 @121 with a 100 dry shot. I run a low lift cam and use 1.85 rockers to get the lift to .600.

What kind of gas mileage are you seeing with that thing? No ticking? I get ticking on startup with all the stock parts.

My DOD lifters were not happy with the Comp 26918 beehive springs. I would get valve clatter on cold starts. I went DOD delete because it really opened up my cam opportunities and I no longer have the dreaded valve clatter.

The Thumpr likes gas but if you can keep your foot out of it, it will get 21+ average on a trip and I can get 19.teens running back and forth from work. The 3.45 gears don't help. My car has always ran on the rich side. It always stays south of 14.7, generally 14.7-14.3 at a cruise. So every car will vary on the mileage. the Thumpr is definitely a head turner.

My DOD lifters were not happy with the Comp 26918 beehive springs. I would get valve clatter on cold starts. I went DOD delete because it really opened up my cam opportunities and I no longer have the dreaded valve clatter.
I had some clatter with mine but worked thru it with some adjustments which made it quiet. First mod done on my car was the 1.85 rockers, but the rocker geometry is off so the lifters lost there preload and would rattle at startup using stock valve springs. Since the motor was getting a cam soon, I installed 7.450 pushrods and beehives. (should have used 7.425 with the Lunati cam). This got rid of my startup noise and made things quiet again but when I added the cam they would get noisy after a hard run. Ok so long story short, the fix was shave the rocker stands (SLP rockers have individual stands) .035" on a lathe and use the 7.450 pushrods with my Thumpr Cam(base circle was smaller on the Thumpr and had 7.500 pushrods). The geomerty fix and proper preload(between 3/4-1 turn) keeps them quiet. I don't remember hearing any noise since then. I have run the 26918 beehives w/shims and a cam with no noise. My conclusion is the rocker geometry was causing just as much of a problem as the preload and it took changing both to fix the noise.

GM has revised DOD lifters that eliminate valve clatter.

I'm not sure when they did that but my G8 is a 2009.5. You would have thought that it would have come with the updated DOD lifters.

This is a picture of a lifter out a 08 G8, the one on the right is out of a 09 G8. The supported lifter travel during DoD activation is @.335" for the 08, and .387" for the 09. The machine work on the lifter is better on the 09 and it uses a pressed pin instead of a small c-clip to retain the roller pin. Seems the spring retainer is better also.

Cylinder deactivation was one of the prime things I hated about my G8 GT and a big reason I got rid of it for a GXP.

The GXP performs better, isn't half asleep half the time and doesn't use any more fuel than my GT did.

**** DOD.
