You can do a cam only with the 04, but if you at least upgrade to stock casting 243 (LS2/LS6) heads, you'll really wake up that LS1. The MS3 is pretty big for a small cube LS1. If you are looking at the Texas Speed cams, you might really check out the Torquer V2 instead.

Here is a copy of a PM with me and predator-Z
GTO is a heavy car, so trq is one aspect you should look at instead of peak numbers.
230/230 .612/.592 111+2 LSA
is what I recommend. It acts bigger than it is, is a reverse split at .200 lifts so big trq output, rvs till 6600 with a powercurve that is almost linear.
the specs are
intake lobe 3016r
Exhaust lobe 3725r
111 LSA
109 ICL
This guy knows his **** and I've always wanted to try that cam....everyone that runs it is 100% happy.
Having said that I went the EDC route and have a SSHT and my car performs but I think it needs a bigger cam after driving it for a while....

Go with that one I listed above, it works with stock heads and it would be a great cam from this car....it is a grind from comp cams, you just have to give them the specs.

I would go with the 228R if i were you but its all up to you on what you want, The 228R is known to make more power than a lot of the larger cams, The TQ on my car is a monster, at 2500rpm im already making 358RWTQ

The MS3 (Magic Stick V.3) is sold by Texas Speed. The main difference with the V.4 is the intake lift is a lot higher on the V.4 which puts more stress on the valve springs. The MS3 is a fairly large cam for the LS1 with stock heads. I personally think you'd be happier with the Torquer V.2 or like Breze84 says, the 228R. I also highly recommend their cam package 2 located towards the bottom of the webpage (see link). The kit comes complete with cam, valve springs, and hardened pushrods.

I will be running the MS3 with stock heads in my DAILY DRIVER until I get the prc stage 2.5 LS6's, I bought the cam package from tsp like batboy is talking about.
With the stock heads you will get the 7.4 pushrods.
