Hi guys. I haven't really posted on here because I haven't gotten the car I'd be posting for yet. I'm planning on getting a GTO, LS2/M6 setup. One just became available an hour from me, it's Quick Silver, which is not my first choice but an ok color, looks good in pictures, owner says not accidents, dents or dings. Price he wants is very good. It needs tires, but I was going to do those anyway. Big problem: It has 92,000 miles.
92,000 I know is a lot for any car, but it's a bigger deal when it's a sports car. He says it was a company car before he bought it, and put 20K on it, mostly highway, which I figured considering it's on '05 you'd have to drive it on the highway to get that kind of mileage. Normally I'm not scared of high mileage vehicles. 6 months ago I bought a Chevy Silverado with 190K and it's treated me fine. But I don't know enough about the GTOs yet to know if there are long term weatr items I should be concered about save the obvious things like clutch, struts, tires, etc.
It's a really good deal, but I am hung up on that mileage. What do you guys think? I could wait a couple more months and get one with lower miles but easily pay 3-4K more than this guy is asking. ALso being in Wisconsin, it's hard to find GTOs within driving distance. Advice? Ideas?

If it's well maintained and driven sanely, those miles are okay (assuming the price is low enough). Yes, clutch and struts will probably need replaced soon. I'm like you though, I'd rather get a muscle car with lower miles. If you are concerned about the mileage and if the color isn't exactly what you want, then keep looking. Although, I personally like the quicksilver color. Have you tried looking at the cars for sale section at the LS1GTO forum?

Suspension and clutch are things I'm not worried about, I'd probably replace those anyway. What I am worried about is if it has had Mobil 1 or some synthetic it's whole life. I know with a high compression, high heat all aluminum motor like an LS2, oil is something you don't skimp on. If it has had conventional oil for most of it's life, i'm concerned about thins wearing out prematurely in the motor. The last thing I want to do is buy a GTO and then have to take the motor out and rebuild it within a year because it got the wrong oil. Am I just being paranoid?

No you're not being paranoid.
But with ANY used car you never know the "actual" usage!
Regular oil changes, burnouts at every corner, redline clutch dumps, you never know.
As has been said check out ls1gto.com lots of very nice gto's way under priced IMHO

What price are they asking? I ask because unfortunately GTOs are not going for what they should be and there are a lot of lower mileage cars out there going for really good prices. For that high of mileage the car would have to be under $15k for me to consider, seeing how there are 50k and under cars out there for around $17k.

If you want a good deal stay away from the forums.
As i have pointed out before there are GTOs that have been for sale for many months with tons of "great price" posts but no sale.
Dealers and craigslist are where the deals are at. Both of mine have been purchsed thru dealers at prices i have not seen either forum come close to for what i got.
Dealers know what the car is worth.
Or if you know how to fix cars buy a lightly crashed one. Low mileage LS2s ca be had for about 12,000 fixed. Both of mine have been clean title but i passed up a lot of good rebuilt title deals for about the price you found the 92k mile one, keep in mind i bought my car in 2008.

I would be worried about it being a company car, it's kinda weird to have a gto for a company car, you would think a company would get something more practical.Plus if it was a company car, it might have been driven like a rental car. I know I would have drove it like I stole it...lol
On the mileage I wouldn't be too worried. I have 97,000mi. on mine. So far I had the stock fuel pump go out 2 weeks ago. and had to put a new clutch in it last summer, but I go to the track quite abit, and that's about it, so far she's held up pretty good.
about 70 track passes on her and some hard running.
