I went and test drove a GTO this weekend.
http://www.autoboing.com/master_Deta...&qsource_id=18
The car was falling apart! Side mirror switch broken, both windows wouldn't go down, had to take off the shifter **** to change gears (Auto), radio fell out when you hit the gas and the seat wasn’t comfortable (where the two sections meet). The test drive turned up other issues, brakes, rotors and the transmission seemed that it couldn’t make up its mind on what gear to choose. I walked away from that car but I still don't want to walk away from GTOs all together. So how typical is this?

Not typical. Must have been a young kids car that was beat with in an inch of its life! I test drove some T/A's with less miles and they were junk from the previous owner/s. Its just the luck of the draw....keep searching and dont give up, they are great cars when you get a good one.

Some are like that. When i was shopping i wanted a black one more then anything and i test drove a bunch of 05/06s with well under 30k and most under 20k miles. apparently it was some unspoken code that black GTOs were only bought by people who mercilessly flogged and abused the **** out of them until it was repoed from them.
The worst was an 06 PBM with 25k miles. It had rust spots. Half the steering wheel and radio buttons were missing. Clear coat was peeling off EVERYWHERE. Blue smoke came out of the tail pipes. Seats looked like they supported a 600 lb figure, had many rips. Seat belt was worn. And the dealer said they just got done "prepping" this car for sale.
Later that day went to another dealer to check out a 19k mile 06 pbm that had a GONE clutch and trouble going into some gears. Dealer said that if it was really that bad that they would have replaced before putting it up for sale. haha
But if you look around there are plenty of Good ones too.

The first one i test drove was an 06. Very similar. Got repoed from a young kid, had like 30,000 on it and the clutch was shot. Could barely get it in gear, and the shifter its self was so sloppy. The guy who owned it previously must have taken the front bumper off cause all the clips were broken and it didnt line up. When i asked the sales men what kind of deal he could make, he looked at me like i was an idiot for even asking. He said the car has been gone over by are top tech and it is fine.
I laughed and walked away and went to his competitions lot across the street. Dumbass lol

wow I had a completely different experience, I looked at and drove 3 different ones before I settled on my 04 PBM M6. But everyone I drove was clean as a pin. The 2 individuals and dealer just wanted too much for the first 3 i looked at haha. Their loss. Keep looking you'll find what you want.

And stick to dealers. They seem to have by far the most realistic prices for these cars, or at least they did a bit over a year ago.
I patiently waited many months when i worked at a dealer for someone to trade a 6.0 6 speed in(they let employees get first crack at it before being sold for profit most of the time, in fact 4 of my friends that worked with me got their cars that way) but everytime someone was about to trade it in once they heard what they would get for trade in they either left and kept it or sold it private party. Knowing how much dealers paid for these cars was a great bargaining chip.

I'm about to roll 100k miles and mine functions just as good as I would think a new one would. I've never had any issues with any of the functions inside the car or the tranny or any of the drivetrain for that matter. Probably the most solid vehicle I've ever owned, and definately the most comfortable.
