I hate the shape of the GTO...

i sure do miss the phoenix on the hoods of Trans/Ams. Sure they flaked off over time, but whenever I see a Firebird resembled car in a game (GTA Vice City) or cartoon; the kid inside me gets all giddy and frantic like a past diabetic gets when he's told he no longer has Diabetes and indulges in chocolate, cake, ice cream, candy.

The 04-06 GTO design was essentially on the monaro design drawing boards in 1999-2000.
Same era monaro that is.
The styling could use some help yes but I love mine. Its a very simple looking 04 M6 ( no auto for me as this was never truly built for drag racing) stock hood but 2006 bumper, tails and brakes. i would love to upgrade the stock wheels. But its fun for people to see it and say "oh its the flat hood its just an ls1 those were slow"...Then the 430rwhp hits the ground and most people disappear quickly. The look on the charger SRT8 owners face was priceless. Its decently quiet when cruising but stick it in 3rd on the highway and things change quickly.
G8's are really cool cars but Id have to have a 6 speed and getting a 6 speed gxp isnt easy or cheap.
Best LS bang for the buck is likely an Fbod if you just want a fast car esp for drag times. But a C5Z06 for under 20k is amazing just not very practical which is why i went middle of the road and bought a 15k 2004 GTO in 2008 to DD. Current setup gets my 26-28mpg highway cruise 70mph I cant complain

... if a girl can run 13.2 with no drag racing experience with just some simple exhaust work that she knows nothing about (automatic btw) i would say the 04 isn't slow stock.
that sounded snotty lol, don't mean to sound snotty!

A friend of mine had an older Trans Am and it had a hand painted phoenix on the hood. It was really bad *** looking because the guy that painted it put a mean looking face with large sharp claws on the bird. I don't know what ever happened to that car, but if it's still around more than likely the phoenix is still in good condition since it was painted on there.

13.2 is a very good time for basically stock ls1 gto and pretty stout mph for an auto as well. 60 ft? Just exhaust no headers?
Under good conditions and 60fts under 2.0 The 05/06's usually run 13.2 stock and 04 are usually around 13.5.

why thank you! I have quite a bit to learn, at least I knew how to stage (unlike all the rice ***** at the track), my reaction time was kinda lame and I never really got to stomp on it right away because I have some really bad all season tires on it.. I think I could milk a 12 out of it with good tires honestly.... There may be more done to the car but as far as I know its just headers and open exhaust.

That mph seems right for 04 auto with headers and exhaust work. I went 107-109 but im an m6 and they usually trap slightly higher.
Its fun to build it up and see the gains. As you can see in my sig my times and stages of build. Looking for an 11.9xxx or faster with current mods

Surprised this thread exists, of course it was started by a Mustang owner. Fun read though.
Retro is kitsch. Really, they shouldn't be calling these "retro" cars such, when in reality, they're tribute cars. They're mild representations of models built 40 years ago (or whatever time period they pick, it's 100% arbitrary).
What I'm curious to know is what these tribute cars are going to look like when everyone finally realizes that retro is dead...
What option does the mustang have? The Camaro? The Challenger? Why isn't the Vette retro?

All of these cars have signature and iconic looks. The Porsche 911 has never looked much different than it looks today and it's been around for decades. So has the original Jeep since WWII. Mustangs prior to the 2005 doen't even look like Mustangs anymore.
If anything the Corvette needs it's iconic 60s look back. Ever since the Camaro returned with it's legendary styling it has put a huge damper on the Corvette's sales. It looks positively stale sitting next to a Camaro.

It's not like the shape cannot be reinterpretted over and over by talented designers.
