Are the auto's quicker and more fun to hot rod and thrash then a 6 speeds
Hey im in the market for a LS2 GTO and preffer an auto because the manuals ive had in the past seem to be less consistant and seem to take longer to accelarate vs a built up auto.
Are the built auto's quicker mod vs mod then a manual.
I found a nice 05/06 for $18K locally but its a 6 speed.
Dont get me wrong 6 speeds can be fun but if I plan on forced induction it sucks loosing boost between shifts.

For the dragstrip, get the auto. For street fun and roadrace, get the 6speed. BTW, if you don't mind paying for drivetrain upgrades, speedshifting a m6 with your foot to the floor = no boost loss on shifts. I prefer the 6 speed, but speaking in general, if you have to ask get the auto. Also, if you plan on forced induction you better bring a BIG budget. Tuning software and a clutch or torque converter will be the bare minimum requirements, along with probably needing fuel upgrades to make any real power. Once you get the suspension to plant that power you are looking at CV's and other drivetrain upgrades. Once you do all of that, then you will want to turn up the boost, so you will need a forged motor. The list goes on ad nauseum.

You can build the T56 to shift flat on the floor. No matter what you do wth an Automatic or stick your going to have some trade off.
I have a 6 speed in mine. I have a couple of Face Plate Pro Shifted Tremec's that I want to play with. One is a Tremec 500 and the other is a 600. When Liberty converted the 500 (3.27 first gear) I asked for the parts to re install the 5th gear. We remove the 5th for the race car. Now that the Mustang is gone I am going to change out the input shafts and front bearing retainers to install it in the GTO. Then I will change to a Aluminum flywheel and Clutchmasters clutch. With the 5th back in the trans I wll be able to drive it to the track.
The face plated Liberty with a good clutch will be faster than an Automatic. We would shift our Paxton supercharged car at 7500 flat on the floor. The boost would actually spike between shifts as the engine hit the chip.
The 5 speed will consume a lot less power also.

I say more fun because ive had 2 hot rod diesels. One was a 99 Cummins with a full on $5K built auto and it was alot quicker then its replacement which is a stick and had 100hp more then the auto but the auto will walk all over the stick.
Its also more fun with an auto lets say breaking the tires loose and planting your foot and doing long burnouts up a hill pitched about 45 degres going 30mph whith the rear tires smoking.
It seems if I had a stick id have to be constantly shifting and letting off every few seconds, as an auto will keep putting the power to the ground and almost increasing power that faster you go.
believe it or not but auto's can be alot of fun, especially when its wet.
I know there a huge difference between my Heavy duty NV5600 truck tranny compared to a T-56.

I've owned both an auto GTO and an M6 GTO.....the 6speed wins hands down.
Not even a contest anywhere outside of the dragstrip or completely constant stop and go traffic

Just buy what you want.
If you buy an auto all you should need for awhile is a good torque converter. They will handle some good power. As far as the rear end on an auto goes you are good for 10's.
