LS1 powered RR StockCar (LateModel)
Hello, I'm in the process of building and installing a gen iii in my late model stock car and need some help. GOAL ~350-375 crank hp.
Car and History...
Late Model Stock Car... was setup for a 1/3 mile oval, currently setting up for road course use. Ran a couple NASA events last season, making necessary major changes this winter. It had a gen 1 383 in it , I sold it to put a more modern FI engine in its place. The 383 took 112 octain and had a race carb. Very high strung.
I wanted something with FI , 93 and reliable. Press the start button and go...
This is my second tube chassis oval to road course conversion... Its a lot of work... Those cars do not like to turn right!
Car
2711 pounds with more lead to remove.
3 link scp ford 9 rear
converting front spindles to use bigger willwood calipers and symmetrical geometry.
4 speed with 3 disc 7.25 clutch
Need help with the engine...
Yes I know the 5.3 and 6.0 are not ls1's as in the title sorry...
I bought a 5.3 as they are a great deal, 90k complete intake coils computer alt starter etc... 300 bucks.
I dissembled the engine specs are perfect! Looks as if the engine has 9k much less 90k
Started reading on the 6.0's so I got one of them too. Ended up being in bad shape, +.002" out of round on all cylinders, all out of round exactly the same on all 8?
Trying to keep the cost to around 2-3k
I have bought.
Kevco circle track pan with road course baffling
Schoenfield headers.
Just picked up a set of bearings tonight.
Car water pump
ASA LS1 crank pulley and balancer.
I plan on using my existing P.S. pump and alternator with custom brackets.
Will that 5.3 make decent power and be reliable with a basic rering job and a cam/spring swap?
PCM? What tuner do you guys use? I am not looking to extract every last hp. Want a good basic all around tune that is safe on the engine and pump gas friendly.
I want to have about the same power as the CT355 crate engine, so around 350 to 375 crank hp.
If I am going to spend money on pistons, I will bore out the 6.0 and go that route, I feel like that really is more than I may want/need.
Just looking for some advice as you guys seem to really know your stuff!!
I have built several road race engines, mostly import, but have also built several circle track gen 1 v8's This is my first jump into the gen3.
Thanks in advance!

Any idea what kind of g's your car will pull in the corners? Do some research on here about oiling issues for LS motors. You may need a dry sump. But research and accusump, oil pan baffle (I'm not familiar with the one you mentioned). Look at upgrading your rod bolts, oil pump, and harmonic balancer.
Car should be taken to a tuner on they dyno. Most are geared towards drag race and want to make out timing, fuel etc. Find one that understands what you want and will set up everything accordingly.
Here is an idea of what to expect.

I would imagine you'll need to dry sump it and you mentioned your on a budget. I would deff like to hear any info regarding dry sump on the cheap as I am going to need to go that route sooner or later

Thanks for the reply, no I don't know the G's it will pull. I have had the front spindles modified to take a 4 pot wilwood caliper and a 10 in wheel/slick. I was running an 8 in wheel/slick.
the oil pan...
The gating is a little different as it is set up to turn ight as well.
I will do the ARP rod bolts, melling hi flow oil pump...
I have a brand new ATI balancer and underdrive pulley for it.
I will buy a accusump for it. Had I do it over again i would just purchase this
http://cgi.ebay.com/ebaymotors/E485-...Q5fCarQ5fParts
Thanks for the tip on the tuner, I have a shop in town that will tune it. I was planning on buying a tune, per your advise, I'll get a custom tune.
Thanks for the link for the 5.3. looks like it will be close to what I want.
I stopped by the machine shop today that does my work.
He happened to have a set of .030 6.0 pistons for a decient deal...
I think we will go that route.
So here is a new ?
Will the stock 5.3 heads put to much compression on the 6.0 with a .030 overbore?
I want to and must run 93. This was the whole point in talking myself into this conversion. Unfortunatly I do not know the dish in the pistons so the question is kind of broad.
I have read about putting bigger valves etc.. on the 5.3 heads..
I only want 350-375hp
Is this necessary at this power goal?
Will my 5.3 heads with just a spring swap be ok on that 4.030" bore?
I do not have larger chamber heads, should I look into buying a set?
The 6.0 I bought was just a short block.
thanks guys, I want to do this right and once...
I look forward to posting this build as it happens.

Don't know if anyone is following this thread...
I have the 6.0 at the machine shop.
Going that route.
Installing Speed pro pistons + .030
Bought a used tr224 cam off this site.
Been all over the place reading about LS seies oiling issues...
I am keeping with the 7qt oil pan + oil accumulator + cooler.
Oil system looks like it will have close to 3 gallons of oil with 3 qts of it being reserve. What othe mods should be needed?
What PCV system works best for RR?
More I read the more ?'s I get.. Man information is all over the place and very contridicting...

I'll take some pics/ post them on Wednesday. The car is at my work, I don't have a camera handy here today, and will be at another location Tuesday.
I can post some pictures of the car build (not the lq swap) from last year tonight.
I'll also post some pics of the lq4 I put in my 52 pontiac in my garage profile...

SNOWDAY!!! sorry...
Yes sir and badly! I got my tail handed to me pretty badly.
My lap times in that car with that setup were worse than awful!
Actually Embarrassing.
I knew they would be bad as that was the first race in that car and it still carried the 1/3mile oval setup, with the exception of the rear gear and a spring change. The frontend geometry and shocks were still short tack oval.
I had a 91 nissan sentra that ran better lap times!!! Really!!!
My excuses for what they are worth...
2 barrel engine + 1/3 mile setup and spindles + used circle track 8in tires
The left font spindle actually has a diffent drop than the RF as well as pos. camber built into it.
All should be fixed by spring.
Then the only excuse will be me!

Update.
for those following....
I can't take pics of the car as they are in the shop at my work and we are out till the 3rd.
Machine Shop -- Machining is done!
The Parts Classifieds section has been a good section for me.
I bought a set of bearings for 33% of the cost.
A cam for 180 bucks, and a set of 799 heads.
The spindles are costing me 2x what I planned... Hopefully the car will perform 2x better!

? on injectors...
6.0 +.030 with dish.
799 heads
TR224 112 cam
Truck intake
Schoenfield long tubes.
I don't want to spin this motor to the moon...
Will the 8.1 truck injectors be sufficient?

Thanks for the reply, got my stuff back from the machine shop.
Looking at the time I have and what else needs done/purchased I may just stick a stock 5.3 in there till I can find more time and $$$ to finish this build up right. I found a 5.3 with 1,000 documented actual miles... Looks tempting for a test/setup motor! It can find its home in my 62 C10 when I get the 6.0 finished.

Just updating...
I have not been able to work on the car lately as I have 2 customers cars currently preping for the Feb. event. I pushed my goal back to the march event to try the new power plant.
