Exclamation Went autocrossing in the Camaro

Went autocrossing in the Camaro with no power steering. The pump is fairly new but lost power steering. I plan to send my rack to Turn One and purchasing one of their pumps. Enjoy the video.

My son got a Turn 1 pump that I installed for him. It's a wicked pump. I also installed a new Mavel rack, Used AN06 steel braided PTFE lines. World of difference. Finally no F-body whine.

I don't believe TurnOne does anything special to the standard steering rack to improve performance or reliability. Does Mavel? I've used a T1 pump for years, first one started leaking after about decade, then I bought another. Steering started to whine a bit on slow maneuvers after I converted to AN lines and cooler. Use Redline PS fluid if you are not already.

Been there! Boiled the fluid on a track day, sent it off to Turn One the next week. Got years out of the pump and still no issues, dozens each autocross and track days

No doubt, I'll have to look into the Mavel rack.

If anyone wanted to read an article about the Turn One steering rack rebuild see below.

I had my rack and pump rebuilt by turn one (not their pump). I still boiled the fluid, I put a heatsink type cooler on... and a long course with a lot of input I still would boil it. I just added a trans cooler as a PS cooler but haven't had another autocross to try it out. It is definitely a work out if the power steering isn't working so well by the end of the run!

My point, if your pump isn't junk yet I would try good fluid and a good cooler first. You will likely need them anyway... then if that doesn't work spend the money on the pump and rack. Or if you don't mind spending money do that all at the same time.

Excellent advice, thank you!

I have a T1 pump, rack, aftermarket swirl pot, trans cooler, and underdrive crank pulley on mine. Power steering has never been a problem. You LS guys need to have the pump modified to accept a larger external aftermarket reservoir as part of bulletproofing the setup.

I thought about installing a remote reservoir just to clean up the look under the hood.

Good point, I do have the LS1 style power steering cooler installed, which does help.

That would be great, but with the pump in the stock location it is very high. I have thought about this, but I don't see how to fit a remote reservoir as high as it needs to be. C5 pump has the fittings already, but it isn't a bolt in. Did you relocate the pump to run a remote reservoir?

Even with the cooler the pump is still over heating... I don't lose assist, but now the darn thing is making noise at idle so I think I've ruined it.

I think they just put the reservoir on the shock tower, that's where mine is but I'm LT.

I think the root cause of your problem is the pump. The stock pump flows a grossly excessive amount of fluid as it speeds up; and that causes the majority of fluid to be bypassed and return to tank unused. The constant pressurizing, bypassing, re-pressurizing causes temperature rise and the fluid overheats.

Turn One pump will fix this. Also talk to them about tires so they can set up the right pump pressure with some room to grow.
Use full synthetic fluid and have enough cooler to keep reservoir temperature below 275°F.

Sounds great need to lower your helmet cam.
Anyone comment on your passenger holding onto the roof?
I just tell my passenger to hold onto their shoulder straps.
Keeps them from doing something unintentionally stupid like pulling up the hand brake.
Normally at AX or the race tracks they black flag you if your passenger has their arm out the door window.

Yeah I got a DQ on that run with my buddy putting his hand on the roof. I'll definitely have better camera positions next time. I recently swapped seats and it threw off my height.
