Im getting ready to buy my third member and i was wondering if this setup would work. Or would it be a dog. Starting line ratios are calling for 9,10,11 range. This is pretty low at 6.25..thnx
28" tire
1.76 powerglide
3.55 rear gear
3000 stall
500-600 rwhp
Looking around 6000-6200 max rpm.
Converter's gonna make all the difference in the world. Whose converter are you running? What are you basing the "3000 stall" on? Advertised or actual?

im basing it off of advertised. Ill probably run the freakshow performance converter with a transbrake.
I'm not familiar with the freashow converters. I've got a PTC and when I ordered it, I explained my intentions/setup and it does EXACTLY what they said it would. My point is when you order, make sure you tell them as much info as you can with accuracy. Don't inflate power numbers, guess on weight, etc. and you should be good. Boost makes a lot of torque, and I wouldn't hesitate for a minute to run a glide behind my 5.3. But again my converter might have to be adjusted because it was set up with a th400 in mind.
My last build i had a 1.76 powerglide with a 4.88 gear. 5500 stall. That is much closer to the optimum starting line ratio. But everybody keeps saying thats to low for turbo car. What gives!
I run a 1.76 glide with a ptc 3200 converter and a 3.23 gear and 28" tire and it works good at my low to no prep track. 5 psi launch will get me 1.50 60' times and if traction was not an issue it whould go a lot faster.
a 3 or 4 psi launch with a 6000 rpm shift will get me in the 9.90 range at 3600 lbs at 16 psi boost.
3.10 gear, 30" tire, 1.76 glide. 8 sec quarter miles and 1.3x 60's with no drama. 18 mpg on E85 @ 3200lbs. PTC 9.5" converter custom spec'd by them. I'm sure I could have gone quicker with a shorter gear, but without OD, it sure is nice cruising with a tall gear.

"Freakshow" converter just SCREAMS quality. Will probably end up making a freakshow out of your motor and transmission. I know it sucks throwing down big money for a converter, but it's worth it.
Around 550-600 crank th350’s get expensive to keep alive. Money ahead going to a th400 if you go with a 3 speed IMO… A glide is easier/cheaper to maintain and work on in my experience though. Esp around 600hp in a light weight car.
What turbo? I had a friend with a 1.76glide/5.3, on3 76 with a freakshow in a gt car would 1.36 60ft off footbrake, 6.20-6.30 regularly, have another friend with a coupe 4.8/ 1.8 glide, s483 and a ptc that would 60ft 1.4x off transbrake and take forever to build boost, put the freak show in it and it would not even build boost, the add stroke of the 5.3 and smaller turbo leave harder as long as the converter is lose enough to get it in the power but not to loose to just blow threw it , converter will always make the difference
if you plan on making enuff power to go low 10s then spend the money on the converter. I have ran a few freakshows and they hold up fine on 5 or 600 hp but we have broken 2 converters on 6.0 turbo cars running 15 lbs boost or so.
I had a Vigilante TC restalled from 2800 to 4300 for my built TH350 and swapped gears from 3.55's to 3.08's, thinking it would load the turbo better and that the turbo's torque would overcome the gearing. What happened was that the shifts resulted in only a 200 to 300 rpm drop. ET/MPH was 11.3 @ 120mph. Talked to a few folks and they said "Get a PTC stalled for your application and put those 3.55's back in there". I did and went racing last Wed night in upstate NY. Off the highway, onto the track. 17psi in my M/T 315 drag radials. Running 2 psi off the brake, sixty foot was 1.5, ET 10.6 and MPH was just shy of 129mph.
I had the baddest glide and converter freakshow could build. It didn't even live on 18psi and 3 hits. Like I said junk, and everyone one I know that has used them has had issues.
