So new to this,
Just acquired a 4x4 4l80e needing a rebuild. going to swap the tailshaft and housing for 2wd use while rebuilding it. while looking for the right parts to swap it, I see two styles of output shaft, bolt on yoke with a lube hole, and slip yoke without a lube hole. I can assume that the bolt on supplies some fluid to the output bushing, while the slip does not? are the housings different? or are they interchangeable? and how do I identify the differences? and what are there advantages / disadvantages to the two different setups? its going to be behind a mild iron 6.0. its going into an IRS car so the diff will not move. does anyone have any suggestions / input?
I'm pretty sure the bolt on vs slip is the 2 different types of yokes. Lube hole vs non lube hole changes for what year the trans is. And 4wd has a plug in the back of the trans that needs to be removed and a new one installed that has a small lube hole in it to lubed the output bushing.
All 2wd 4L80E's need a orificed cup plug to lube the output bushing.
'91-'96 have lube holes in the output shaft.
'97 & up DO NOT have lube holes in the output shaft.
I would go with a "Fully Splined" output shaft as the slip yolks fit them a little better than the Bolt-On yolk style output shaft.
Check you output carrier for a OSS Reluctor wheel, Sonnax sells replacements.
You can remove the plug at the back of the case with a dent puller after drilling a small hole in the plug. Paper & Rubber kits come with Rubber Clad Orificed cup plug.
so being into the 00's I won't have a lube hole.. I looked through my rebuild kit, I do not have a new 2wd lube plug, where can I get one of those? also I peeked into the hole where the output sensor will go. I see the teeth of the base of the output shaft, are those for the parking pawl? they aren't on center with the hole, so I can assume it will also need a tone ring. that about right?
does anyone have a picture of the ring installed? its hard to tell from peeking through the sensor hole.. and also, can I just drill a hole through the plug while the transmission is apart? its just a metering hole, so I would assume as long as it was the right size, it would be fine..

This is from my parts box. Not usually a reason to change this. I'd be surprised your kit didn't have it.
It's the orificed plug you need for a 4x4 to 4x2 conversion.
