I already searched this but didn't find anyone or video of anyone who installed a motor from the top with the heads still on(one post I searched said I would have to pull the heads). I have the radiator disconnected from the engine bay and what not and I was able to get the old short block(No heads) out no problem from the top but now I have a new short block with the heads installed on the short block. will the ls1 engine go in from the top with the heads on in an 01 f body? or will I have to take the heads off?
PS. I would rater install from the top for safety concern and have no good way to life the car up high enough to go through the bottom
Thanks in advance.
i've done it twice through the top on my 99', hood on, heads on. its tight with crank pulley on but with no accessories or crank pulley its an easy in and out job
I am the necromancer!! lol but its good info and was the only thing relevant that came up in Google search...
I'm about to try this out soon. I really want to just have the heads already on before i stick the engine in so i don't have to fit the studs in the engine compartment. I'm even continplating yanking out the 4l80 with my bum LS1 attached to it, and then reinstall the lq4. So far heres the donor, no accesories and ill leave the harmonic balancer off before i stuff it in there. the heads are just sitting on the block before i crank the studs down the old ls1 semi preped to be yanked. id drop it if i could, but im on an inclined driveway unfortunatly before i could get the car in the garage to do the work. It would be difficult to control the car and an engine at the same time with the engine hoist and the try and wheel 300lbs worth of front end around the driveway. its gonna be hard enough pushing the hoist and engine.
I’ve done it with my LT1s multiple times and an LS once already. Dropped trans (T56), no intake, water pump, or balancer. Goes in more sideways actually and then twist. No levelers or special lift plates with the LT1 just chain. I did use a plate with the LS though.
About to cram mine into the engine compartment soon soon. Mine has the crank and water pump on it, but I don't have anything on in the front of the car.

Just did this last weekend, disconnect transmission, remove all accessories from front of block, remove crank pulley, remove flywheel. Lift plate from oriellys on valley cover. Piece of cake. Plenty of room
If you have the long block with nothing on it’s a very easy job.
I think from the time I had the cherry picker hooked up. It took no more than 5 min to install the long block. Just make sure you have a cherry picker with long enough reach. Even the 2 ton harbor freight will not reach unless you take the bumper support bar off. I chose not too so I opted to use a Bluebird engine hoist. Super long reach made the job a breeze.
