Default First Time Fire Up Question

Hey guys,

I have this sweet piece of Chinese steel coming in a few days, and I plan to use it as a engine start up stand. I am going to weld in some X bracing for support on the bottom, and put some locking casters on it.

So far the plan is to take the engine off the stand and place it on the dolly so I can get the flywheel on, and wire the engine. The engine is a 2007 5.3 Gen IV engine (see below).

I am using the factory harness stripped down to the bare essentials, and a factory fuse box. I already have a flashed ECU without VATs, and I plan to use a fuel injector cleaner to supply pressurized fuel to the fuel rail. My question is this, I currently don't have a key or ignition switch. Is there a way to temporarily wire in a momentary switch to act as a key switch? If so where would I wire it in? As always thank you guys for your help.

Thanks
-Andrew

What?

For wiring, you need to supply power to everything that needs power when the engine is running. You also need a way to run the starter (unless you are doing it old school style with a hand crank...)...Power to the starter, then a momentary switch for the starter solenoid...

This is what I am referencing for the fuel injector cleaner https://www.amazon.com/gp/aw/d/B00GZ0H9VC/ref=mp_s_a_1_4?ie=UTF8&qid=1506479382&sr=8-4&pi=AC_SX236_SY340_QL65&keywords=fuel+injector+cl eaner+tool&dpPl=1&dpID=417FvhbgihL&ref=plSrch

Unless I mess something up everything should be powered. I will have to take a look at my starter and see if I can figure it out.

Don't forget big (4 gauge minimum) ground cables to the engine from the battery.

Not sure about that injector cleaner thing. I'd drop a fuel pump into a gas can...or something...lol

Will do. Do you have a better recommendation on how to supply fuel to the fuel rails? I am open to suggestions, and if there is a more affordable option that doesn't cost $160 I'm all ears haha. Thanks for the help.

The injector cleaner thing can simply be filled with the fuel of your choice & pressurized to the psi you need.
Works great.

Much simpler than rigging up a pump, can o fuel, electric, plumbing.
Not to mention safer...

I was kind of thinking the same thing. I was just hopping there was a more affordiable soloution out there besides buying a $170 fuel injector cleaner that I may use only
once or twice.

Wait hold up....when have you ever know a claimed to be rated 1000lbs Chinese engine dolly to be flimsy? Haha. I plan to beef it up. It should hold the iron block which is only around 500 lbs. I will post pics once I get it all mounted.

That sort of stand is made for WORKING on the engine; NOT for running it.

I got the stand in, and will be moving the engine off the stand shortly. It is study, but definitely needs some additional bracing.

I have one of those engine cradles for my 6.0 and with the engine bolted up it is pretty sturdy. Of course extra bracing should be used. I have seen people start engines on an engine stand the one to rotate the motor to assemble and that looks way scarier than the cradle.

I plan to move then engine off the stand and onto the cradle this weekend. Once I have it on there I will see how much additional bracing is needed. I have a lot of 2"x2" steel tube I plan to construct into out riggers. I will post pics.

Did you have to modify your cradle to fit the engine?

I bought the LS cradle from summit and i just have the short block on it now. No modifications but get the motor mount bolt started before you tighten everything so it stays lined up.

Well the one I bought off eBay that said it would fit a SBC is nowhere near the correct size to fit the block. I'm going to weld up a start up stand this weekend. I will post some
pics when I'm done.

Well here is the final start up stand. I might put in some additional bracing on the up rights, but it seems to fine with out them right now. Let me know what you guys think.
