How much horsepower will a 400 block handle.
I am building a 406 for my 1988 IROC I have a 400 block (509) casting bored 0.030 over (4.155). I was wanting to know how much horsepower the 400 block will handle with Eagle splayed cap and ARP main studs. I am think about up grading to a Bowtie block. I Have a Eagle 4340 forged steel crank (3.75) and Eagle 6.0 H-beam rods and I am going to buy SRP forged pistons. I want to spray the motor with a 200 shot and maybe a 250 shot. My goal with my car and the 406 is to drive to the track in stock trim with ET streets and run mid-low 10's and drive back home.

It is possible, the problem is, finding a good 400 block. I have had my friend lately run thru 3 of them, burning up pistons with a 200 shot(poor tune). They did well, made plenty of power with solid roller cams and big nasty ported Dart 230s, and the 200 shot. But if you have the money, eliminate the chance if putting money into a old *** block and taking chances, the best thing is, if the 400 chevy overheats and breaks, you are not out pistons, rods ect...
Thing to do lately, is a 350 87+ 1 piece rear main and do a 396 ci stroker, eliminates the cracking problems and olmost just as many cubes,

At about 800 FWHP with solid filled water passages you are only going to get about 1 season of drag racing out of it before things start cracking/breaking. I would look into the Dart SHP block and not worry about it anymore. With the amount of n2o that you are wanting to spray, you will need a better piston than the SRP's (4032 alloy). You are going to need a piston designed to handle those kinds of duties (2618 alloy).

JE, Ross, Weisco, CP, Mahle Professional (not the PowerPak kits that are commonally found), Diamond, etc. But you need to check with the piston manufacture and make sure that it will be able to handle 200+ shot of spray. I would just call the piston manufacture of your choice and let them know what your needs are. Then let them recommend their best piston for the application at hand.

Not that this helps much but I have a friend that has a filled 2 bolt 400 block. It was a big pain in the *** and he said an aftermarket block is the better route. I'm not sure how much compression it has maybe 13:1, ported dart 230 heads, ported dart 1050 dominator intake, big solid roller cam bla bla you know. He hasn't ran the car for several years but its a Vega drag car and it runs low 9's around 135 mph at a very shitty track. At a good track he would need wheelie bars. Oh it has a powerglide with a transbrake and I'm not sure what converter.

These days it may be cheaper and definitely easier to just go with an aftermarket block. Dart is now making a cheaper cast iron 4.125" bore SB. There's also the bowtie blocks and World blocks. Check around. All the aftermarket blocks are stronger than the production blocks.

Dont know it this helps but i run a stock 400 block filled to the bottom of the water pump holes. Cast eagle crank, h beam rods, je flattop pistons and old afr 227 heads. Ive sprayed it 475 hp in 2 kits quite a few times grudge racing.
Heres a video on radials and a 175 shot.

My 406 is almost identical to the OP - splayed caps, 4340 Eagle crank & h-beam rods, Wiesco pistons. It dyno'd 660 rwhp with a 200 nitrous jetting, and since then I have gone as big as 300 jetting. I have been running this combination for around 5 years now - driving it to the track and back home. Best pass to date was a 6.40 @ 110 mph.

i took a 400 4bolt out of an old biscayne wagon. made a 427 stroker with it put it in my 65 chevelle.. did 519 rwhp n/a .. a 250 direct port. that lasted a couple of years... last summer started ls1 build and like any other hillbilly i kept adding more n2o till she popped.. worst thing i ever did... ricekiller65 is still waiting for ls1 build to be done..

My times are below with a 406. I started with a 2 bolt main block and had it converted to 4 bolt splayed, half filled as well. Eagle 4340 stuff and mahle pistons. Upping it to 400 this year and probably gonna stop there.
