Default SBC Block 4 Bolt Main Reconditioned, 350-383

I'm finna build a 383 stroker for my 84' El Camino and my budget is 2g's. I seen this block that had the machine work already done to it and it said it was ready to assemble but I know those can sumtimes lie. So I was wondering if this is a good block to get for my build:

The Info:
- These 4 Bolt Main Reconditioned 350 Chevy Blocks are ready to assemble. Great for your 350 or 383 engine build. All blocks include 4 bolt center main caps, line honed, clearanced for 3.750 stroke and have brass freeze plugs and cam bearings installed.
Available in oversizes to 4.060 inch bore. All blocks are machined on state of the art CNC equipment. Machined to 9.015 deck height and torque plate honed.

Is this a good block? Will more work be needed after I get it or can i start assembling? Thankx, oh and any other info would be helpful

I have built a 383 that was stout on 1000$, but, that was out of pocket, the rest was buying and selling old parts that were laying around. There are cheap kits that can be had, but the real break down for a budget build would be:

Rotating assembly: 700$

Balancing: 200$

Heads if you found something needing rebuilt like vortecs: 300$

Heads job: 200$

Springs lock and retainers: 150$

Work to make the springs fit the vortec heads and studs, probably: 250$

gaskets: 120$

Cam(a flat tappet if your cheap): 100$

Rockers: 100$

Pushrods: 100$

Intake used: 100$ (for a decent one)

Carb(my way, used, then rebuilt): 120$

Valve covers and any other misc parts like bolts and things not mentioned: 300$

That is about as budget as it gets my friend, so add ALL that up then the price of your block you found or but a block(say a used one scored for 100) and then machine it and have it clearanced if you cannot yourself: 300$ for basic work in y area.

So, here is your budget not including a block, or block machine work and prep and no labor putting it together as i am assuming you can do it yourself:

2700-3000$

Hope this sheds some light for you. As i am sure you already have good headers, exhaust and a transmission and rear end that will hold the 450-500 FTLBS torque you will be making right?

I plan on doing this in the future (hopefully before my current 350 blows up). I will keep my cam, valvetrain, heads, intake, carb and block. I still don't think I can do it for $2000! Here is my price list so far...
Scat Rods $270
Scat 9000 Crank (internal balance so I can keep my flywheel and balancer) $250
Pistons for 6" rods $550 (with rings)
Block work $250 (hopefully only bore and hone)
Rod/MAin/Cam bearings $155
Balance rotating assembly $150
Head Gaskets $80
Other Gaskets $100
Head bolts $100
Oil Pump $60

That is already $1965. How do you add even cheap heads, cheap valvetrain, intake and carb, flywheel, balancer, etc. for $35?

He can use stock piston rods, and his pistons dont have to be forged, so you cannot throw your build info in there, i have him a top to bottom list for the budget minded build. Yours will last a long long time, mine will last as long as he doesnt spin it much further than 6000 and doesnt have a monster cam.

Agreed, machining will cost close to $800 to $1000.

You might as well increase your budget for the build close to $4000 for what you want to do, stroker.

Stock rods with forged slugs and the cheap scat 900 crank can live pretty good with ARP bolts with keeping it under 6500, the kieth black FHR pistons are not bad, i have used them and they are quality for the price.

True, he could use stock rods. However, with a decent cam, there could be problems unless the cam is a small base circle. When you're on a shoestring budget (like most of us here), everything is a compromise. I spin my stock bottom end L98 to 7000RPM all the time...definitely not optimal!

Summit has a 383 bock ready to go for 651 bucks. Which is a really good deal I think. I have a .060 over block in my race engine that is race prepped and has splaid 4 bolt caps and I spent over 1100 bucks on the machine work and caps. Plus these blocks are brand new gm blocks that have never been blown overheated or anything like that and theres no guesswork. Wash it and assemble it. You can do it for 2G.
