Default 500whp big block street engine

I'm looking to build a 396 big block to make 500 who through a 12 bolt rear with either a rock crusher 4spd or m21 4spd, or a beefed up 5spd for streetability. Can you guys give me a "build list" to get me to 500whp and still be able to cruise in town and roll through a drive thru without having to baby the car I.e. No crazy lift cam and heads that require a ton of rev to get the car moving. I was never into big blocks before an spent most of my time messing with small blocks so some big block guru help would be awesome thanks guys!

Would also like to keep it carbuerated with no fancy fuel injection or turbo or any type of FI. And it will be going into a 68-69 camaro or 68-70 nova.

500 WHEEL horsepower from a 396...you are looking at 1.5HP/CI. That is no easy task. Especially with no fancy heads, no big cams, pump gas, etc. I agree with Kingd, step up to more cubic inches.

Well I should have specified and its my fault I did not. I dont already have the engine, so any engine will do, it just needs to be a big block, i even thought about settling for a few less ponies and dropping in a friends 502 gm crate engine. This is all just a hypothetical build that will come to a reality as soon as I sell my current car. I was just wondering how much money I would need to shell out to get a big block chevy to 500 streetable hp. But looking at crate engine prices v.s. building one its easier to spend a bit more and get a crate engine, sometimes you dont even need to spend more and its a drop it in and go (pretty much) deal.

If you don't have anything yet, dont' start with a 396 block. They are pretty much useless. You can bore most 454's .060 over and throw n the 1/4 stroker for your 496. Easy to do and doesn't cost much more than a stock stroke 454 crank.

Start here:

I have an OHIO crank kit in my 455 Pontiac and my wife's 489. Superior products. You can't go wrong.

I'd go with either a Gen VI 502/509 or Mark IV 468 or 496. Also, I'd run oval ports for something being kept on the street. Were you planning open or closed chamber heads?

With a good,
750 Holley DP
Edelbrock high rise
.600 something roller cam and lifters
Open chamber oval port heads ported and polished
Headers
On a .030 over block with 9.5 to 1 comp
Rebuild kit and machine work your looking at 425 hp for about 4500.00

Another 1000.00 can get you a Bill Mitchell 434 smallblock that makes 550hp with 575 Ftlbs of Tq

If your set on a Big Block, go big 496, 502, 540 and pony up for a good set of aluminum heads that flow.

I'm looking into a 502 from a guy down the road from me with 800 miles on it. That seems like the best set up I have found so. He wants 4000 for it. And it's about a 5 minute trip to get it. It is a zz502 502 horse gm crate engine.

If I had 4 grand, I would buy the 502 crate. Youre not going to build anything for that little of money.

Are you planning to go injected or carb? A stock truck 496 with a cam and headers and some PCM work will do it. They are low compression and do well on pump gas.

When you get down to money, a LSX crate motor is hard to beat and they are light.
