Default Sbc 305 questions

So I just picked up a sbc 305 to rebuild and drop in my 96 s10. The guy I bought it from said it came out of a 83 chevy but wasn't for sure if it was the original motor. My question is there is a knock sensor in front of the starter on the block. Does anyone know what year the 305 started with knock sensors? Also the motor is carb and was wondering if you could just leave it unhooked when I do the swap?

The casting numbers can be found in the sticky above to let you know what year the heads and block are.

They started in 80. Leave it unplugged.
When we replaced the timing chains with steel the knock sensors would pick up the noise and pull timing.

Yeah I haven't cleaned it up yet to get the casting numbers. so should I just leave the knock sensor there an not even worry about it?.. Also I know that a 305 is 45 ci smaller than a 350, what could I do to the heads to help with the air flow? I was thinking about a 3 angle valve job. I'm wanting to make good low end power if possible

There is no cost effective way to make power from a 305. The bore is small and holds back flow from better heads. But it can still run decent. Some vortec 350 heads and a small cam will wake it up. Just depends on how much you are asking out of the little motor.

Yeah there are small, I'm just wanting to bore it .30 over and put a good hitting cam in. I mean it's going in a s10 so it should pack it pretty good with a good set of gears. not wanting something crazy fast juSt a good daily driver if need be.

Word of advise dont spend too much money on that motor. get it running put a 268H Magnum cam in it to get a little thump to it. and do the swap. that motor will never be what you would want it to be as far as performance. later on build a motor on the side to swap that 305 out with. That is what i did with my 1st v8 s10 except i got a 307 for mine for relatively nothing, money wise. My s10 ran a 13.9 all day long and got 25 mpg and ran on 87 regular. it was better economy than my DD at the time, a 4 cyl 99 sonoma. i delivered pizzas in my v8 s10 and my tips doubled when i did, and i spent less on gas

I'm not wanting something crazy fast or anything I just don't go with a 350 because I was helping the guy out and it was priced right. I'm just wanting to rebuilt it with a nice cam ect. Not trying to build a big horse power motor.

I was in the same situation you're in now 10 years ago. needless to say it became a 9 second street beast later on. no one builds a v8 s10 to make it a just a cruiser. too much of a PITA to just build a DD . like i said "eventually"

Well, here is my new "daily driver" s10 I'm throwing together. Just a little baby 4.8 but it will bang heads with the average 350 when it's done. Nothing fancy, but it will be a 6 speed with a baby 220 duration cam. Shooting for 30 mpg. This will be driven every day so I am going to try to get AC on it.

https://ls1tech.com/forums/carburete...build-s10.html

A 4.8 and 5.3 can be had for really cheap so make sure when to decide to ditch the 305 you go ahead and swap one of them in, or even a 6.0 of power becomes the desire. A 5.3 will propel a vehicle well but the 6 liter and 5.7 Ls1 and ls6 just produce the torque we all desire.

I mean I want to get all the horse power out of the 305 I can. Even though everybody tells me go with the 350 And all which yeah I understand that. But I got the 305 to help a buddy out, needed the cash. Is there any suggestions to make decent hp out of a 305?

350 vortec heads, performer rpm intake, comp cams XE268H pn 12-242-2. should get you in the 250-300ish hp range. all will interchange with a 350 when you pull the 305 out. do not expect great hp numbers out of that motor.

That's what I'm going to use. Just hope I can get enough out of it to push my s10 on decent. I'm not going to be dragging it or nothing like that.

That sucks. I'd scrap the engine before you put any into it. Pitting in the cylinder is just going to be a full rebuild.

I agree. pull it apart, clean it up and make a coffee table out of it
