Lightbulb Chevy 4.4 267 cu. in...

Okay, I did a search but came up blank. I have an '83 Chevy Caprice Classic with a 4.4 liter 267 V8, and it needs some work. The engine is kinda tired. I'm going to be doing a lot of little things to it within the next few months to get it back to working order (it runs but not very well...right now needs a coil & control module that I'll be installing today). Anyway, what can I do to this engine to make it perform better. No, it's not gonna hang with my ls1 , but I want this baby to run & run well. I'm thinking of topping it off with a four barrel intake/4 barrel carb setup, but what else can I do to increase performance? I'm also gonna do an exhaust system & some suspension upgrades along w/ some wheels/tires eventually. Anyone have any suggestions on engine/suspension/exhaust? This is NOT going to be an all out race car but I would like to be able to cruise around town w/o having to worry about people getting mad b/c I'm not going "fast enough." Any thoughts, fellas? Thanks!!!

Btw, I know it's easy to just drop in a 350 or 454, but a 350 would be @ least $800, I would think, and I know I could buy one w/ roughly 400 hp for a couple thousand, but I don't wanna spend that much initially...probably will in the future at some point, but for now I want to get the most out of what I have. Thanks again...

With the money you're going to spend on an intake and carb, you can find a 350 at the yard with low miles and it will have way more power plus bolt-on potential.

Give it a good tune up. Plugs, wires, cap, rotor, fuel filter

been lookin' around/calling around all day & I think you're right...may end up just getting a 350...out of curiosity, I seem to remember the 350 for a particular year had more hp than other 350s for some reason...thinking it was in 70s or so, but I seem to remember it pushing hp comparable to a 400 small block...you guys know which model that was? Thanks again for the responses/help!!!

Look for an 80-86 truck motor.

I think your talking about the old school 1970 LT1. No not the fuel injected ones of the 90s. That bad **** had a solid cam out of the factory. It would rev to 7 or so and was one of the best engines in it day. Killed big blocks.
I'm not sure you'll find one, especially if your worried about price.

My Dad's '82 El Camino initially came with the 4.4. We tried finding an aftermarket carb for it, but there isn't any. At least there wasn't any 10 years ago. The 4.4 was a debored 305 I think. An economy motor, so it makes sense there aren't any performance parts for it. We replaced it with a rebuilt 350, not costly at all.

I know a guy that has a '71 lt1 in the crate yet. Not something he will let go cheap though.

it's been years since i've seen a 267. with it's 3.5 bore and 3.48 stroke it was certainly built for fuel economy. it may be worth looking into a mini blower such as a holley or b&m in a 142/144 size. it should hold to about 8psi fairly easily and have the power output that you'd find in something similar to a stock 350 or better. with ebay these blowers are all over the place and if you don't have much into this engine it's not a big deal if you kill it. if you later swap to a 350 the blower would also work on that.
