As far as strength, you have to consider torque more than HP, and how much it can handle the load (sticky tire vs hard launch in the higher torque range) don't forget wheel hop and shock loads! You will have a higher critical speed with this driveshaft over the stock steel shaft as well. But to answer your question, we have customers that have over 650 HP that use their cars for drag racing using this shaft with no issues.
Here is our description on our website:
Reduce unwanted driveshaft vibration and rotating mass by roughly 5 pounds over the steel LT1 and L98 driveshaft with this custom 3.5" high strength aluminum driveshaft that weighs only 12.3 lbs. This driveshaft also provides a much higher critical speed (maximum operating RPM) than the stock 2.5" steel shaft, the 2.75" aluminum 1LE shaft or even the 3" LS1 shaft. The stock steel shafts in the 1993 to 1997 LT1 cars are 2.5" in diameter. The 1988 to 1992 1LE aluminum shafts were 2.75" in diameter. The 1998 and newer aluminum LS1 driveshafts are 3.0" in diameter. The 3.5” diameter LPE driveshaft has a critical speed of roughly 11,000 rpm (over 50% higher than the factory driveshafts). This aluminum driveshaft is 3.5" in diameter and weighs 12.2 pounds. The U-joint centerline to centerline length is roughly 40-9/16”.
In testing performed by General Motors on our 3.5” driveshaft, this driveshaft did not show resonance (hit critical speed) until roughly 237 mph (tested in a 6 speed LT1 equipped F-body with 3.42 rear end gear).
The LPE driveshaft also includes an internal driveline noise suppression system and is high speed balanced to reduce vibrations. LPE recommends this heavy-duty driveshaft for virtually all high speed and racing applications.
