600 GSXR vs Mach 1 vs LS1 SS
On my home from work around 7pm, I spot a silver Camaro SS rolling in behind me merging onto the beltway. I exit to the feeder and he follows and ends up to my right at the light at the first intersection. We're both about 3-4 cars back from the light, so need to get clear before any fun starts. Im sitting there wondering if he's going want some action as I see him eyeing my car over.
Light goes green, traffic in front of us opens up allowing me to navigate around and get to a clear section of road. He doesn't aggressively pursue, but stays close enough to keep me in his sight.
Approaching the next intersection, light goes yellow as I approach in the lead. I stop for the light. Glancing in my passenger side mirror, I see the SS rolling in to the right lane as I sit in the center lane at the light. As I'm looking over at his car, a silver/black GSXR 600 pulls up on my left.
The rider on the bike throws some revs at me and the camaro. He lurches forward a few times as cross traffic passes in front of us. I remain quiet in my car keeping a close eye on the cross signal waiting for it to go yellow. The camaro to my right lightly taps his throttle to signal the bike he wants some.
The bike starts bringing his revs up as does the camaro. I continue to sit there patiently with my idle bouncing, car shaking just waiting for the light.
Cross light goes Red and my heart is racing with anticipation. Our light goes green and the bike immediately has a car on me while the camaro is a half-car out on me and pulling away. I'm easing the clutch out trying to keep tire spin down in 1st, but it comes on anyway so I short-shift to 2nd so I can go WOT. My drag radials are warm but not sticky from my drive home so I'm hoping they'll grab.
I hit 2nd gear, pound the loud pedal and starting reeling in the camaro. As I shift into 3rd and start winding it up, I pass the camaro and get alongside the bike. I hit 4th and the bike and camaro are fading in my rear view mirrors. I shut it down in the upper rpms of 4th as its no longer a race, but them chasing me down.
Since I've got my car on "street" mode, it's actually in conservative, 93-octane safe mode, so I was quite surprised to take down that half-pint crotch-rocket. The camaro made a noble effort with a strong hole-shot, but ultimately lost the horsepower war on the top-end.
Thumbs up to both guys. Definitely been a while since I got to play!
In case you're all wondering, my car dynoed at 600rwhp SAE w/ ~15psi boost through a 6-spd manual. That's my "street" trim.
