Default Roush stage 2 vs 400 hp camaro ss

So the other night me and a couple buddies were hangin out. The guy with the mustang has roush catback and cai and a diablo tune with a 3.73 gear, auto. The camaro has the 5.3 LQ motor: ls6 intake, lid, full exhaust w/cutout, custom comp cam, M6 and a 3.23 gear. Made 380 rwhp with the clutch slipping badly. So we head out to the nashville superspeedway where there is a 5 lane road that is never used besides when there are speedway events. And since my lt1 has a bad opticrap i rode with my buddy in the ss. Anyway the first race was from a 50 roll and the mustang stayed even for a second before we pulled. Next we went from a dig, the mustang jumped out by a 2-3 cars on the launch and we didn't reel him in til about 100
We did a couple more dig races and found that it took us til 70-100 to catch him. I expected the ss to have no problem with it but we were all impressed with the little 24 valve.

Something's wrong with that SS, stang guy lied about his mods, or your friend is that bad of a driver. IMO.

That car was putting down almost 100 less rwhp (assuming your friend has 380). That car would have been at 300rwhp at best on a happy tuning tool. Probably the auto vs. the manual issue.

As far as power is concerned, the stage 2 roush is just a bolt-on package. As pony said, 300 to the wheels is the most to expect (and that's wishful thinking).

Either that stang was a stage III or he lied about mods or your buddy is the worst driver ever... to put it in perspective, I raced an 01 GT with almost the same mods as the one you wrote... 1st and 2nd gear, he was a few cars back, once we hit 3rd, it was absolute destruction...

something wrong with my buddies car is possible. But the 4.6 makes 300 from the factory. Just the CAI on a mustang makes 25 hp. And i rode in the roush before and after the tune and it did woke it up alot. If he is making 330 to the wheels and he has the bigger gear i don't see why he wouldn't be in front til 70. The roush guy is road racing at the speedway this weekend so i think afterward we may have to make a 10-15 mph pull.

I ahve to correct you a tad. A 3V will NOT make 25 hp on a CAI alone. An S197 wakes up with a CAI and custom (even mail order in some instances) tune though. You have a good point there. 330rwhp? Hardly man...not even close. you're a good 10% over on that guesstimate. And 3.73s are one or two gears away from stock (pending factory A5 gear option - 3.31 or 3.55).

That's not whp. He should put that on a dyno.

I would be surprised if the whp gains on an intake were much over half that number. :2cents:

Yup. While the newer 2v with PI heads and 3v cars are better than the old ones, people really have an inflated opinion on how much power those cars put down. People also take the manufacturer claims for hp on modifications pretty literally.

That's because they dont' realize that those mods include a 'retune'. it's not a plug and go thing. Manuf. don't want people to know that though.

The Roush driver had an automatic. It doesn't take much skill to mash the pedal to the floor.

Needed a motor and got a good deal on the 5.3? I'm at a loss to think of another motive to downsize.

I would presume he got a deal on the 5.3 shortblock.
