Default Ran a Porsche 928...

Kind of a long story sorry lol... This is from thanksgiving. I was on my last cruise of the season before i put my SS away a few days after thanksgiving. I was on my way to my GF's parent's house on the four lane west of town, cruise set at 68, when i saw a red porsche looked 80's go the other way towards town. This is fairly odd around where i'm from (m-ville is about 3500 people), but didn't think anything of it. I watched it drive away glancing in my mirror to get a better look. I saw brake lights, and it turned around at a get-in in the median, and i saw its headlights start bobbing as he was shifting after me. I was kind of shocked, but hey whatever. I waited till he hit the blinker to go around me and nailed right before he hit my rear quarter. He was probably doing about 80-90 at that point, he got 3 lengths before i started reeling him in, and i passed him, and put another 4 or so on him before he shut down and turned back around. We were probably doing about 145 at that point.

Last week a local engine builder i am friends with comes up to me and said "must have been feeling fast a few weeks ago out on the four lanes eh?" Turns out its his porsche he had shedded for a few years, and he just pulled it out that morning and got it running again, and was just tearing around at the end of the day by his house. I asked him about it and he said it was an 89 928, and had a 5.0. I looked up the specs and stock its pushing about 315hp. Knowing him i doubt it was completely stock, he can build a pretty mean engine, and gets a lot of business internationally for pulling truck and harley engines, but it couldn't have been too hardcore if i ran him that well with a full bolt-on LS1. He said i might have gotten him up to 150, but he'd have walked me at any higher speed. BTW this is the same style porsche that was in Risky Business.

Sorry for the length. I was pretty happy with the run.

A 928 IS a very sexy car. Old but timeless. And by the looks of it not too slow for more then a 20 year old car. Good kill

The 928 is a really nice car, especially the manual 928GTS. I'd like to have a low mileage one but they are surprisingly hard to find. Good kill. Do you happen to know if it was a S4 or a GT the S4 had 316hp and the GT had 326, some say 330 both were 5 liters.

My dad has a 928 S with 20,000 miles on it. He never drives it at all. Its a nice car to be a mid 80s model but couldnt hang with LS1s or anything.

Considering a 5spd 1987 928 can run high 12/13s I would say it could keep up?

I know the earlier models may have been slower. But the 87+ weren't.

There isn't much of an aftermarket for the 928 5.0l's.
But there is one independant who makes blowers for them.

I really have no clue. I just know its an 89 928 and it was red haha. I'd assume its an S4 but not positive.

Eh... I think the 928 is one of the most god awful looking cars ever. My sister had one when I was in high school, and I used to borrow it when ever my car broke (which was often). I was embarassed to be seen in that thing.

LOL! Now we completely disagree. I think that the 924, and 944 are very very good looking. Just get rid of the stock wheels, and bam, good looking car. I would love to have one as a DD.

I think one of my favorite cars of all time are the old Carrera's. But now we are getting a bit off subject.

I worked on one once, the only thing scarcer than
aftermarket performance parts is decent local Porsche
mechanics so I got to chase an acquaintance's stumble
problems (turned out to be injector imbalance from silt).
That, and somewhere along the line people started
cutting sensor wires. A not-bad aluminum V8, if you like
being an orphan. Engine compartment is kind of pretty.

Only way those things will run away from you is if you
run out of gear (or still have a speed limiter).

I always liked the 928's. I probably spent a few $ in the arcade playing this classic....

My friend had a LOT of racing miles on his 928 in the SCCA and was a consistent top 3finisher regionally and even ran Speed GT locally (a stroked 928 was a mid-pack car a few years back).

As a stroker it was even faster but then a backmarker recently took him out. He's almost done rebuilding the car. It sounds awesome.

They were fun cars, friend of mine had one. That is, they were fun when they weren't on fire. Horrid electrical systems.
