Thumbs up SS vs red C5 vert

Around 9:15pm today I see HIDs about a 1/8 mile behind me so I just cruise at 60mph (I've been wanting to run someone lately). Finally as he gets closer he pulls up right next to me with both of us cruising around 65mph. I noticed he had black wheels and a red lip. He also had the C5 ZO6 ducts on the side. I don't know if he was a manual or auto and I don't know if he had mods because I couldn't hear his car over mine.

Anyway, I down shift and get next to him as he was about 3/4 a car ahead and he hits hit and I hit it right after. At this point he was a car or 1.25 cars ahead and it seemed to stay like that with me inching up on him and I mean inching. He let off a little early so I guess I lost that one. I pull up next to him again and I anticipate his hit (not many people know the 3 honk rule so I don't bother much). We hit it almost simultaneously and he was right there with me & when I hit 4th I seemed to barely pull him and by this time he was at my front tire and then he let off. He let off early again because I wasn't at the top of 4th and there were no cars in front of us. Hmm... maybe he was nervous about cops or something.

So we run one more time, but this time we slow to 50mph... once again I'm waiting on his hit and BAM we're off. As soon as we hit it I instantly put about 1 foot on him (he was at my SS emblems) and when I hit 3rd it's still the same until the top of 3rd where I start to inch away. I hit 4th and I notice he lets off when I have about a 1/2 to 3/4 a car on him. Do you guys think he had mods? I ran another C5 not long ago that wasn't a vert and I beat him by about 1.5 cars from what I remember. Very close runs though! He had light tint and from what it looked like he was a Mexican guy around my age or so. I should of followed him to ask what his mods were.

My mods are LID, FTRA, P&P TB, LS6 INTAKE, LT'S, LS7 CLUTCH, GMMG

Nice runs. A stock C5 would have gotten walked by you, so he had some kinda mods IMO. A C5 Z06 woulda been door to door with you IMO: dont know enough about C5's to know if only the Z06 had the vents though.

No, I raced my friend with a 04 ZO6 and at the time of our runs he had exhaust only and he beat me by 2 cars by the time I let off and if I stayed in it he would've pulled more. C5 ZO6's had ducts and not the base model C5.

If its a vert ZO6 it aint a ZO6, just Z parts on it. To my knowledge Chevy never produced a convertible Z....

A c5z would walk you extremely hard 30-120.

Didn't I say something along those lines on post #5?

What is "extremely hard"?

Sorry, I was talking more to sticks.. just didn't make it obvious, by any means lol.

As hard as a correctly set up full bolt on-small cam only fbody would.
A stock z will trap 115+ all day. Cai/exhaust and they are 118+. I give it 4 lengths and pulling very hard by 120.

It takes a cobra intake/exhaust/tune/sometimes a little smaller pulley to keep up/beat a stock z.

Kinda low trap for a modded z, you are out west though so probably on par.

That was his first time running his ZO6 at the track and at that time I believe he only had the ZO6 for about 3 months. Does exhaust on the ZO6 even add much HP and is there proven track results?

The stock Ti exhaust flows extremely well so not much can be gained there. They get a nice gain from headers and an xpipe of course.

Good races! I agree that it probably had at least a couple bolt-ons to run that strong. There have been very strong running stock C5's, but they are not too common, and I've never seen a really fast stock convertible C5.

I'm sorry, I thought a stock C5 Z06 only put down 350-360rwhp. While a full bolton like OP's should be putting down similar numbers--- and utilizing that power better due to aggressive tunes and lack of torque management.

I've only raced 1 2004 commerative edition Z06 when I was bolton: he tried a ricer-flyby that I stopped with him a 4 cars out. By 100mph I seemed to be slowly gaining, but around 130mph we evened out with me back 3 to 3 1/2 cars.

On a stock c5z catback gives none, headers 10-15 rwhp (their real benefit is great gobs of low end tq), cai is about 10 hp, and tune for close to another 8-10 hp. These are the gains I've seen on my z. Most z's pick up a few tenths and a few mph on the track with bolt-ons, but they really shine on highway runs.

They are probably close.. I would give the Rwhp edge to the Z still. Not to count it has more aggressive gearing and a 300+# weight difference.

Think about it this way... How many simple bolt on full weight fbody cars do you see running 115+mph on average? Not very many, very very few really.

He was modded. Good run! And 116mph for a catback only c5z is good. Catback gives no power

That range is probably about right for a 2002-2004 C5 Z06. The fastest trap I've seen for a stock one is 118 mph.
