Default 410w Mustang GT vs my Heads/cam Ls1 trans am with video!

Ran my friend's car tonight. it is as follows:

1995 Mustang GT
410 stroker
ed cutris 23X/24X cam
AFR 205 heads (decked, not sure what cc)
TFS intake
Full exhaust
3.73 gears
T56 trans
full tubular suspension (k member etc)
weight reduction

he ran 11.4 @ 125 last year, but had bad rings, he just had the motor rebuilt and the heads decked a bit and added a tubular K member and some other weight savings.

my car:
stock 346 LS1
Trick Flow 215 heads milled to 58cc
231/237 cam
FAST intake
Full exhaust
3.73 gears through a 9 inch
lid/ chrs1313 ram air
weight reduction

First run you can hear me spin, and i pull back to about even and we had to let off (view from the mustang)

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=BNQ-69PVGQU

Second run, we both start in 2nd this time, no spinning for me.. i pull and hold about a half car (view from my car)

Not what I expected. Your car runs hard.

What do your car and his car weigh?

Good runs, though I expected a little more from a 410ci. I think he was beginning his creep back there at the end. You got into 4th there, so 120-130ish when you let off? Just a guess.

Not really. Friend of mine runs AFR 225's on his LS2 (364ci) so it's a similar situation. Big heads just make a huge, broad torque curve, even with a mild cam.

I think a lot of people are too worried about missing a gear or shifting from 2nd to 1st or 3rd to 2nd and shift really slow. Most of the times when I missed a gear, it was because I was thinking too much.

Case in point: I missed 4th at the track a lot, and that's an easy gear to hit. It would be because it's my last shift and I would be thinking about that as I am about to go for and think "don't miss it" but just thinking about it made me more prone to do it.

Best advice I give for people wanting to shift faster is (sounds kind of gay) but bang gears around town when you are driving normal. You don't need to be shifting at redline to practice. Just poking around town, bang the clutch in, then slam into the next gear...just don't pop the clutch out. That gets you more comfortable shifting faster and recognizing the pattern than only shifting fast when you race.

Don't think, just do.

(Although some people, like a friend of mine, just can't make their feet move any faster while also making their hand move faster. For these people, I have no advice except buy an auto and stall it. )

not suprised a bit.

a standard bore windsor block will not let the afr heads flow to full potential. SBF without really good parts cant compete.

Does seem slugish in the lower rpms? Good to know. I always thought when you over head a motor it'll seem slugish (low airspeed) until the motor gets up higher in the band.

It's not really over-heading. It's a stalled/geared auto though, so it's not like a 6 speed low end. You would much rather have a seriously badass top end with a tiny or poorly spec'd cam over a big cam/**** top end, because a great top end can make any cam shine.
