Looks like the ZL1 is in trouble. Another fail by GM.

For our first official drive of the 2013 GT500, we headed to Atlanta, where we sampled the latest super 'Stang at the track and out on the open road. Rolling along on the highway, the GT500's extra horsepower and torque isn't as noticeable as you might think. For instance, in top gear at around 80 mph, turning roughly 1500 rpm, it's a complete pussycat, with minimal engine and exhaust noise. No, it's the getting to 80 that's the fun part. Hammer it from a stop and the rush of 631 lb-ft engulfs your body, pinning your head and torso to the optional $1595 Recaro bucket as the GT500 blasts from 0-60 mph in a scant 3.5 seconds, on toward a quarter-mile time of 11.6 seconds at 125.7 mph.For context, the previous GT500, which put out a relatively pedestrian 550 hp and 510 lb-ft, needed 4.1 seconds to reach 60 and 12.4 seconds at 115.8 mph to eclipse the quarter, while the aforementioned ZL1 required 3.8 and 12.1 @ 117.4, respectively. Big power equals big improvements for the GT500. But beware of that big power: get too overzealous with the throttle, and the tires will quickly resemble burnt toast. Luckily, the new GT500's obscene power is absolutely controllable.

I wouldn't call the ZL1 a fail by any means. To call the ZL1 a fail would be calling the 2V, etc. during the years of the F-body a fail. Clearly they outsold the fbody and weren't a fail. As a company, they don't want to take sales from the Corvette. Giving the ZL1 same 638hp as ZR1 would steal Corvette sales.

Always knew the GT500 would end up being faster. Power:weight combined with Ford finally usually launch control and non-skinny/shitty tires makes for a go-fast recipe

As long as the Camaro keeps up sales, GM should be fine

So ford has failed because they have yet to make a car as fast as the ZR1 right?

ha comparing the zr1 to the gt500 as a last resort. Sad that is what it has come to Chevy needs all the advantages it can get nowadays I forsee 10s at ~130 stock from the new 500.

Reading fail=ninja edit. While GM does in fact remain top dog, (until the new viper hits the streets ) the gt500 isn't really in the same class. Semi-heavy solid axle four seater for 50k vs 3k lbs 'Vette for 120k...ZL1 needs to lose some weight and slim down the dimensions.

Hmm..lets see first test and has ran.same magazine test of Z06 and on way to ZR1. Tops out over 200mph for half the ZR1 and 20k less then a Z06..yep still a fail. Bad you have to now compare a simple mustang to.a vette.

2v sucked *****. Hell I think the 03-10 GT was a let down. Hence why I never owned one.

There is no comparison lol. The ZR1 is SOOO much more than a 1/4 mile car. Comparing it to a Z06 is even stupid if you ask me

The GT500 isn't a technological masterpiece but it sure as hell isn't "simple".

Calling the ZL1 a fail is just to get under the GM faithfuls skin...same as claiming the ZR1 makes GM king to get under the Ford guys skin.

To be completely honest and unbiased I like the new gt500 far and away more than the zl1. Ford is going to have GM's ***** in a vice for some time. All they got to do is wait for GM to make a move then bam 3 months later new 5.0 and same with the new gt500. GM cannot afford to retool the zl1 or their R&D costs go through the roof. Ford was coming up to the end of the production cycle and just waiting for GM to make their move so they could trump them. It's the same **** that BMW does to Audi
