Crappy neighborhood, high crime rates, houses not kept up to par (that kind of goes with crappy neighborhood). Stuff like that. I define it as more of trashy, crime ridden neighborhoods whereas some like to involve race in it.
I guess there isn't really much of a ghetto in Des Moines, but at the private college, Drake University, there is a shooting a stone throw away from campus very frequently it seems.

Cali has some of the most beautiful places to live, and 80° sunshine on the beach in the middle of winter, that's why the property value out here is what it is. You ever heard that saying you get what you pay for?! LOL

There isn't much of anything going on in Des Moines or Iowa for that matter because its boring and no one wants to live there. Lol Any city/state as densely populated as California, like Florida or Texas for example, is going to have its fair share of crime. Its part of the city life unfortunately. If you're afraid of those kinds of things I sugget you stick to the rural way out areas where nobody lives.

Yeah DSM has been trying to revitalize its downtown and has done a pretty good job over the last decade. Thankfully downtown bars are pretty fun to me. I realize it is apples to oranges but I've always considered the city life of Phoenix suburbs or somewhere else warmer but at the same time I adapt pretty well to tiny towns. I just ask about crime because I don't know any other city life as a born and raised Iowan.You aren't kidding about the rest of Iowa. Parents now live up in Spirit Lake (NW Iowa off of East Okoboji Lake). 15,000 people in about 5 small towns packed together. It is an absolute blast over the summer to just walk down to the dock and fire up the boat or jet ski and when it swells to over 100,000 people on the weekends due to tourists visiting the lakes area. I absolutely hate it in the winter though. Nothing to do!
Dude, tell me about it. Iowa sucks *** in the winter. Your comment reminds me of Daniel Tosh's quote, "The mid-west is for those who gave up on their hopes and dreams" or something like that

I can imagine. I also agree as you said politics in CA suck ***! I try not to pay attention to that garbage. Other than that its ok out here, expensive but pretty decent.
