Default Raced a new 5.0 today.

I was cruising on the freeway its about 105 out, and a new 5.0 passes me. Mid aged man driving it. We were cruising about 80 ish, I down shifted into 4th about 4200 rpms, and gave him a nod. We both get on it and I pulled him about a car length all the way through the rest of 4th, and then he walked me through 5th. He got out on me about 3 cars, and stayed there as we blew past 130. I was impressed. We both gave each other a thumbs up, and I went on my way.

I have a 99 SS M6, with just a lid and cat back. Pretty sure he was stock. Fun race. I want to give a go with one from a dig.

You did well for having less power.

That will change real quick. I have only had the car for 8 days. LTs, X pipe, Magnaflows, short shifter, cam, and Nitrous, and a NicD tune are all on tap.

I really dislike losing.

Good run. About what I would expect. Was it a auto or manual?

OP..nice run man and I think you did excellent. Gotta love those LS motors.
You ran him all the way through 4th so your ride did very well! Now get those new mods on and find another one.

BTW..losing is good for you..it keeps you humble and give you one hell of an incentive to get more mods.

Just throwing out, you running in 5th is like running him in OD as him in 5th is like you in 4th. Either way both nice cars!

Good point man... 5th "OD" gear is more of a "save gas" thing on a long ride... I personally never take it any further than the very end of 4th at about 6800 rpms. This puts me around 130mph with my 4.10s. I am not into to the top end speeding thing anyway.. If I was, I would have left the 3.55s in.

I'm thinking the 5L was modified. Often, perhaps most often, after 120mph or so, the LS1 with a few mods will carry pretty good top end and the Mustang, whether it's the factory tuning or something else, doesn't seem to be as strong past that speed.

At 120mph he is still in 5th gear with his 1:1 ratio. It carries just fine past that point.

Those pesky little 5.0's are quick cars stock. Ford did their freaking homework, finally. Good run.

I was pretty impressed with what I bought to the table, esp with 145K miles on my car. I was in the RPM range for 4th so I had that on my side. It was a blast and those cars do run.

I think from a dig, it could be a drivers race.

You guys make valid points for the gears. I think my 3.42's hurt me in 5th gear, but nothing a lot more power can't fix. I am a Ford Fox Body 5.0 convert over to the SS (one of better choices of my young life...haha), so it was cool seeing the new 5.0 in action.

Ya think? I don't and one reason why is the evidently(widely reported) drag limited top speed of 149mph... It can't be pulling all that strong beyond 120mph if the drag actually prevents it from hitting 150.

It's limited electronically to 155mph... here's one with intake/tune hitting 167mph
