Default 66' Chevelle w/454 vs. 01' WS6

My friend at work has a 1966 Chevelle that had a rebuilt 454 put in it. I think I can beat it with my car (see Sig). We are setting a date to go to the track and run the 1/4 mile and see who gets bragging rights.

Does ANYONE have any idea if she can beat me? She said she can squack the tires at 80 mph...

The 66' Chevelle: 454 rebuilt engine, 3 speed hydro glide tranny, 2.5 dual exhaust, street tires (16x9), Holly double barrel.

Any input would be great.

not unless she's stalled, and got some tires to get it to the ground.....If she does, The car will hold you off through the 1/8 and then you SHOULD pull her in...

She can chirp the tires at 80mph on street tires? Big friggin' deal. I'm not sure what the Chevelle will run, but there's only one way to find out. Judging by your sig, you're running mid 13's only so I'd be a little concerned if I were you.

Would all depend how well the 454 engine is built, and how well it can put the power to the ground. The 3 gear tranny's gonna help you, and street tires is going to limit how much of that emense torque he can put down.
His ability to chirp at 80 mph doesn't mean much. Likely where he shifts near readline from 2nd to third. THis may mean he has short gearing. He'll likely going to find that car's a b*tch to launch right, with all that torque and short gearing. This is all if he's running street tires. If he's running anything from D/R's or better, he'll likely smoke you bad.
Lot's of assumptions though, so I may be completely off.

Race him for fun.
You may find that he may not beat you as badly as you may think.....

Let us know how you do!

it takes a lot for old iron to beat new iron, especially with street tires. Good luck.

chirpin the tires at 80 mph prob means a bunch of torque and no traction

I can spin my tires past 90 mph. Chirpin at 80 isn't too impressive. I think if you get a decent launch it will be a close race but, I think you will win. Get some power mods on that thing. You need a torque converter bad. Also what is a Holly double barrel? Do you mean a Holley four barrel double pumper?

The tranny and carburetor info was given to me that way. I beleive the Holley is a four barrel. The tranny I would go the powerglide if that is a 3 speed.

powerglide is a 2 speed auto which if she has that is why she's chirping the tires at 80 because depending on the gears 80 might be where it shifts to 2nd

Really depends on her setup in the 454, Do U know what kind of cam, heads, intake? I had a 66 Chevelle with a 454, but it was built, with those mods I would have slaughtered U, it just really depends on how its built. What kind of gears she runnin? 3.73 or 4.10's?

She does not know if any internal mods were done.

Also, I have had a 70' Grand Prix with a 455 and understand how strong the engine is. The thing is if I raced my 01' WS6 vs my previous 70' Grand Prix I believe I would beat it. If this 66' Chevelle has a stock rebuild then I am pretty confident I have a chance. But, I do not know since I have not raced against a bigger V8...

Then again I may get my A$$ handed to me.

Well to be beat by a classic is always good if she wins, I raced a 66 GTO when I had just minor mods on my TA, looked restored, but yea the TA killed it, nice guy, gave him a thumbs up and he just smiled. So either way, just be safe and good luck. Keep us updated

I still think you can take her. Race and post the win or loss.

Well I have been trying to set a date to run. She is confident she will kick my ***. But, she wants to get a new radiator for her Chevelle because it is running hot. So far she has said it looks like late May.... I will keep ya posted.

Also, if her car has a relatively unmodded 454 I am pretty confident I will win. But, I have been considering a 3200 TCI Torque Convertor with a Trans Go kit and B&M trans cooler. We will see

well- i don't think 454s came stock in 66, because the GM 400+ci ban wasn't lifted until 70, so it probably isn't rebuilt, just plain built. or it it's a stock LS6 454 (doubtful) that's about 500hp at the flywheel, because they were all heavily underrated. whoever said take a lot of old muscle to beat new muscle- idk about that- buy a $1500 junker nova and put in a $10000 454 putting down low 600s, 9", gears and tires for $5000 and you're gonna rape most new cars, that's the price of a 98 TA so. . . it all depends.

The difference is that most of those old school reds are so stuck on their "big blocks" wheither it be a 396/454, 426/440, or a cobra jet. Even the small block reds think that nothing stands a chance. They all need to be put in their place.

I work at a parts store, and I see these filth bags all the time. They all say it'll run this and that, and makes this and that power, but no one has the paper to back it up.

I'm not disputing that these older cars are fast, but i'm going to go with 99-LS1-SS. I'm guessing this girl was told by whatever shop did the engine that it makes like 800hp and will run 10's, so that's why she's so confident.

off topic... bowtiered... I want your Blazer.

When I last had the Engine numbers from the block for her 454 I did a search and I believe it is from a mid 70's truck. Would that make a difference?

The only 454 that most anyone cares about is the LS-6. That's the one wet dreams were made of I guess. 4 bolt main, 11.25:1 compression. It was rated at 450hp gross
