I posting this because I have to settle a disagreement with a friend. We were arguing about the best way to start a race. From what I've experienced, most people start their races by the honking of a horn.

Whenever I'm starting the race, I honk the horn three times as evenly spaced as possible to make it fair. Go on the third of course. I think the optimal spacing between the honks should be about .5 of a second.

My friend prefers three honks, but with the first pause shorter than the second.

I'd like to hear what everyone's ideas about the perfect street start.

the best way we ever started a race was having a girl stand between the cars about 10 feet ahead and she took off her bikini top, when we saw nip we would hit it.
for roling starts if its me and some one i know.. we normaly pace each other till we hit an innersection after we hit the white line that your supposed to stop behind we punch it. but if we are racing strangers every one seems to understand the 3 honk idea.

The way I usually do it is I yell "just go", and when they get about 3 carlengths ahead, I go.

We do it a bit differently. Start the race with one car going off the other car's motor. If the guy who gets the jump gets pulled, its over, he lost. If he wins, then you do it again, and let the other guy get the jump. After both parties get the jump you can usually easily tell who is the clear winner and it takes away the whole, "you jumped the gun" argument.

I like the "3 honk" idea, but not everyone is hip to that. I usually just pace a car that I want to race, jump ahead a couple of times, and if he/she bites, IT"S ON!!!!

Okay cudaeh ... the way I KNOW this is BS, is the fact that you actually RACED after the girl took her top off. If I ever had a race start like that, I would let the other guy run down the road as fast as he would like, and go home with the now topless girl.

I have a different idea that works really well. We always have a guy with one of those really bright "spotlight" flashlights stand about 20 feet in front of both cars, on the right or left side of the road.
He'll flash the spotlight once, when both drivers flash their headlights back, it means they are ready. Spotlight waits a few seconds, and flashes one time, meaning GO. This has always worked out really good around here!

Seems like the Honks idea is good too, if it's an impromtu race or nobody is there to Spotlight.

Anxious to hear other ideas!
