My buddies LT1 doesn't leak oil but he had to rebuild both the top end and the transmission before 150k miles. The dude he bought it from was shady though.

I put a rear main seal in my 1994 formula at 157k, that was the only major oil leak it had in the 10 years I had it. It was a little damp on the front crank seal, so I put a speedy sleeve and new seal in that at the same time. Was good to go. I thrashed the pissed out of it too. Have had friends have them with no major oil leaks. I did a watter pump drive seal in one the other day at work, but it was nothing major had the watter pump off and it was damp. Some people just have bad luck I guess.

I'd rather have a small oil leak than a coolant leak. Sure some people have gotten intake gasket leaks. Maybe because when the PCV gets clogged, you know, the crank case needs to breathe, and the weakest link is that intake spot? It could have maybe been the VC gasket, or the oil pan gasket? hmmmm.

LT1s get a bad rap because of ******* morons like you. "Optis are bad because I keep throwing $60 autozone optisparks at it" The water pump placement sucked, but unless it exploded and you ignored it, the opti survived.

zzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzz
Wait, motors run on oil? Gaskets and sealant aren't supposed to wear out, the fact that the LT1's do is what makes it a leaky motor. I've had the leaky intake without PCV failure, but even if that is the reason, you don't see other motors spewing oil. It's a poor design by GM.

You don't see me making excuses for the Duratec 3.0L because the cat converters break down and suck the material back up through the EGR. It's just a bad design.

FYI, the duralast gold optispark is actually a damned good unit. The LT1 doesn't get a bad rep off from morons, it gets a bad rep because it's a bad motor. It's why the LT1 fbodies are dirt cheap, despite the fact that the LS1 cars are uglier.

So you're using only the LT1 SS times then? Don't want to talk about the other couple hundred-thousand LT1 F-bodies?

You clearly don't know 2V engines. PI 2V makes peak power right at 5K rpm, 4.56 is way too much gear for it. 4.10 is about the sweet spot for a 5 speed PI GT.
Yes to all of the above.

So then why does anyone replace gaskets if they don't wear out? You seem to be the only one on this thread with an LT1 that pissed oil even after a rebuild

Duralast gold was a good unit because it was a rebuilt delco for a while, not sure now if it is though.

LS1 cars are uglier? Only one that is "uglier" is the catfish.

Typically a gasket goes bad when the bolts holding it down loosen up and it starts leaking. Otherwise gaskets only need replacing if they were damaged during disassembly. I will typically replace them, just for cheap insurance, but I have been in a pinch before and reused oil pan, valve cover, and timing cover gaskets. Never have a problem.

The install of the rear main on that car was fine, doesn't rule out a potentially bad gasket, or something wrong with the sealing surface on the crank. It was a new crank, so it might have been machined funny.

That corvette was leaking out the intake as well, that stopped with the rebuild. An LS1 firehawk and WS6 look better than the LT1 body, but the rest are LT1 all the way.

I most often see SBC's leak because of over torque on the cheap tin covers or when people don't use the correct washers or "load spreaders".

Then the tin just bends and won't seal properly

Yup, with the 4 plastic dowels that screw into the bolt holes that hold the gasket so you can slide the pan over them and everything is lined up. Alot easier

I can not see how people say that the LT1 motor is a bad motor. I can't wait to get the heads and cam on mine, surprise people.
