Hot Rod I believe did the Mustang H.O. carb. 302 vs L69 carb. 305 vs 2.2turbo buildup in the mid-80s. Mid and mid-low 12s for the V8s. The 305 broke a rod which took out the block. Chev 305 had too long a stroke to rpm compared to the Ford 302. I think the Mopar did high 12s.

There's more than a few "bolt on" 305's running lower 13's. Stock G92 cars doing high 13's BONE STOCK. The LB9 305 had what they call the "peanut cam" in the auto cars. So a cam, full exhaust, built 700 with stall and gears & little intake work. Made the LB9 305 able to roast on Fox bodys all night long. A t5 LB9 had the larger L98 cam (Still small though) Same mods to those, and it's a 12 sec car. Fast in 1996!

Bullshit. There was one 1le press car that ran 13.9, it was never backed up or repeated. When you consider that an LT1 SS car ran 13.8 with 75HP on the 1LE and only 400 extra lbs. Then you consider that the C4 corvette ran 14.2-14.5 with 100 extra lbs and 15-20HP more.

I've only seen 1 1le car tested tho. Optioned right the turdgen tpi was quick for its day and a great handler. 305s simply made more power than 30p00s.
G92 cars was another good runner.
I never had a 30p00 outrun my 305 either.

Same story as the Coyote and the LS3, the 305 made more power, but went into a heavier car. Gearing was the biggest fail on the TPI cars, but they were likely trying to meet gas mileage standards.

Find one to outrun me then, doug.
They're either so rare and valued that they stay stock in the 15s, or guys who have a brain swap in a 350.
They're so rare (running well) that everyone on the internet references the same 2-3 people, meanwhile there are threads on corral with lists of 10 second 302s.

Edit:
18% came with manual transmissions and that includes the V6 cars.... 235K total over the entire run.

Thwy are actually very rare. It's why 305 cars got a bad rap. It's easier to find a tbi 305 than a tpi 305. 85 was the only year for a good running tpi 305 with the automatic. All the others had puny cams. As jc a 5speed tpi 305 is rare. A g92 car is more rare and 1le they didn't make many of at all.
So now you want someone to find a h/c 305 after all these yrs....lol. the 305 was a smog motor and still made more power than 30p00s. There was little to no performance delopement in the aftermarket for the 305. Because unlike furd you could slam a 350 in it and maje better more better. Sorry you have to stip out to be competitive.
That's what happened when you evened up the weights on the card. The 30p00 lost. It's why back in the day the furd guys opted for the base model mustangs vs a iroc or later the z28s. Even a optioned up Fox would lose to the tpi cars.

Most car guys don't know the difference between the 230hp G92 optioned models, or the 5-speed and automatic models, or the 170hp lackluster TBI versions (not to be confused with TPI versions)... Mustang guys smoke the 170hp TBI models, as well as the "run of the mill" TPI automatic models, and believe they can do this to any and all. Well, not all 3rd Gen F-bodies are created equal. Optioned from the factory with the 230hp TPI (not TBI) engine, manual 5-speed tranny and 3.42 gears, these 3rd Gen F-body sleepers gave 5.0 Mustangs absolute hell.
In 1990 the G92 option code became a full performance package rather than simply a rear axle option as in previous model years... GM also offered an answer to the Saleen Mustangs by way of option 1LE, which consisted of the G92 optioned without A/C and other creature comforts, and the addition of Corvette brakes and other road racing equipment.
About the only way an IROC-Z Camaro could take out a 5.0L Mustang from this era was with the Tuned Port Induction and addition of these performance options: G92, 1LE, L98 or B4C.
The TBI powered Camaro were not at all in the same league as the performance version TPI Camaro, or 5.0 Mustang, these 170hp TBI models were GM's economy de-tuned versions and were around 50-60 less horsepower versus the performance optioned TPI models. These non-performing models gave the 3rd Gen F-bodies a bad rep on the street... many think that these were the example of 3rd Gen F-bodies, when in fact, and unlike Ford, GM offered many models, with many engines, camshafts and rear-gear ratios...
For more info on these rare optioned Camaro & Firebird, check out my website http://www.streetshowdriftdrags.com/C... or the Mustang guys can check out http://www.Mustang-Town.com
