Top speed is achieved in 5th. I looked on one of those gear calculation thingys and it said that 6th is geared to go 270mph! (3.42)

I heard you can totally **** up your transmission trying to run 6th too long. I also heard 5th is the top speed gear, 6th just slows you down on stock gear. I just heard that stuff, haven't tried out 6th personally.

6th is just an economy gear, not a gear you'd touch in a race.

I shifted mine into 6th going 145mph, the needle hardly stayed still and I felt like I was really straining the engine so back into 5th it went

You will not pull in 6th gear. As mentioned previously, 5th gear is the top end gear.

I'm not too sure about my Cobra though. 5th gets wound out real quick. I've never gone
to 6th, which is probably a good thing. All that load on the motor (from boost) is not
a good thing.

Well that sounds pretty retarded since it's designed to be used for cruising for long distances for economy.

i think he just meant trying to run the rpm's up too high in sixth. it's designed for cruising at highway speeds, and you gotta love pulling around 1200 rpms at 65 mph.

A friend and I were jsut cruising around and started doing 6th gear rolls for the hell of it. With our 3.42's we could get up to about 115 the we let off. I have no idea how much faster we would have gotten but I don't think we would have gotten much faster.

I hate all of you

<2700rpm @ 70 with a .68 OD

Anyways, no, it wont "**** up the transmission" But it is really not good for the motor, could lead to excessive oil consumption, increased bearing ware, etc. etc., basically, you are lugging the hell out of it. However, if you had a BEAST of a motor, it might kill 6th gear, who knows? I am not sure how strong of a gear 6th is (some gears in a tranny are stronger than others due to the shafts/gear locations physically. For instance, on a T5, 3rd is the weak spot.).

I think J-rod put 4.10's in his car, said it was useable.

Never got the chance to MAX out 5th but, I was still about a thousand rpm from MY redline, and I was about 187ish.

Wow, I didn't think anyone was that ******* stupid around here. I guess I was wrong. Any idiot knows cruising at highway speeds is perfectly fine. The whole point of the thread was pulling 6th gear to top speed, not cruising down the interstate at 60mph and 1200rpm. Read the goddamn thread before calling my thoughts retarded, jackass.

People who have done top speed runs claim that its dangerous to use 6th gear (stock gear) because the transmission can get too hot. I dont know how true that is, but I'll avoid trying it.

Thats Joel, he runs a modified 3.73. That has nothing to do with pulling 6th gear on a 3.42 car to 200+mph.
