Picking up my Camaro SS in an STI
Hi guys im picking up my 98 camaro SS M6 tomorrow in MA. Its about a 3-4 hour drive here from north jersey. We are taking my friends 2006 STI up there and he has the japanese spec ECU which has somewhere around 348 to the crank. My SS has 87k on it, SLP package, new SLP exhaust, new cats, waterpump, K&N, fuel pump, belt, thermostat, alternator, tires. Only synthetic oil used. Along with the SLP package it came with a dealer tuned option which brought the car up to around 380 hp 395 ft/lb tq. It has a plaque right above the radio. So all in all im very happy and cant wait to pick it up tomorrow. I was wondering on the way back we are definitly gonna have a battle between the SS and the STI. What do you think the outcome will be? both from the highway and a dig? thanks
ps. here are some pictures of my SS

sounds nice. I just got my camaro last fri. Im having lots of fun with it, ill bet you have fun with yours too. Is that 380/395 at the wheels? thats nice if it is, how much did u pay for it?
Im thinking you can take the sti pretty easy, its only about 100lbs lighter and you have a big hp advantage. He might pull you from a dig with his awd, cause your gonna have a hard time if ur on street tires, but you should start pullin him once you hook up. You'll prolly leave in in the dust from a roll

I think he'll beat you from a dig, not because the STI is better than the SS, but simply because he's more used to driving the STI than you'll be driving the SS.
Watch out for the 2-3 shift, looks like the stock stick in there, and it's really easy to screw that up going to 5th (not a huge deal) or 1st (potentially pushrod bending)
With that said, you'll probably get him from a roll
Nice SS and a good price for it

Nice find, sounds like a good deal.
Race the STI on the way home, and rip him a new *******. He'll get you on the launch, but if you get traction and stay on it (don't miss any shifts either lol) you'll blow by him like he's standing still. The AWD system saps a lot of power through the drivetrain, so that claimed 348HP is probably only about 280HP at the wheels.
Congrats on the purchase, have fun with it

yea nice car man. im in the same boat as everyone else about the race. only thing im skeptical about is the 380hp dealer tune. with those mods and a GOOD dyno tune, i'd say you would have a realistic 350hp at the flywheel. whoever told you 380 is blowing smoke up your ***.

maybe his 'dealer tune' (really wouldnt want a dealer tuning my car though). is a 112 224-230 cam and heads, lol. else i dont think your going to be seeing much of 395ft lbs of torque. thats a good amount for a head/cam car, much less stock internals.

Hey guys well i just picked up the car today and its insane. We took the STI up there and it was definitly feeling real fast. I was getting a little scared when i first got in and started driving the SS back. So we started making our trip back and he pulls next to me. he had it in 3rd and i had it in neutral reved up and threw it in 3rd around 60 mph plus i had my friend riding shotty with me and he had no one. We both took off at the same time and i started pulling on him. The closest he got was is front bumper to my fender area. Once i threw it in 4th i was GONE!! he called me while we were driving and was like dude no joke that thing is rediculously fast. take in mind that he used to rally so he knew his car real well and i just drove this camaro for the 2nd time so i dont know much about it. Now i know it says those numbers and im not exactly sure what the real numbers really are but i know thats its super fast hahaha and thats what matters. Ill be bringing it to Englishtown in a few weeks after i learn to drive it perfectly.

Welcome to the ls1 club. I have a little knowledge on both cars (more informed on ls1 speak than subie speak). Anyhow, your hp figures are definately crank figures. As a heads up, sooner or later, members here will remark as to why your sig says those #'s with your mods as stated, as we commonly post rear wheel hp and tq figures on this site.
Secondly, it sounds like your car is nicely tuned, and should easily trap near 110mph.
I think the STi would be closer to the 105mph range, so you should have crawled away from him at a steady pace.
AWD does not sap as much power as everyone thinks it would until you're travelling pretty damn fast. Also, from a dig, the STi will jump on you rather easily (unless you're an ace at launching), as I've read of people with little experience cutting 1.9 60's on these platforms.
Congrats on the purchase. I miss driving the ls1 powered Fbod platform. Enjoy it.

The AWD system saps up a lot of power at any speed, but it just happens to get worse at higher speeds. Figure about 20% drivetrain loss at lower speeds, and even more the faster you go.
